Helen - Day 14 - the day that the rains came down!

The winds picked up more than expected last night and we fair sped along - Joe reported hitting 11 knots briefly overnight. I was up on deck by 9.00am to watch the sun rise. Joe was already concerned because he had seen lightening in the distance and as the day got lighter we could see that the clouds were getting darker and we were heading straight for them. The colours in the clouds as the sun rose were spectacular - purply pinks and unusually the clouds in front of us glowing orange. You could mistake it for a sunset rather than sunrise. This was our warning as to what was to come.

The radar then picked up great red blobs which are an indicator of rain and as we sailed into them boy did it rain. As I write it has been raining solidly for 7 hours and the wind has dropped. At one point the wind was light and all over the place so the engine was put on to move us along. No point wallowing in a downpour. Pleased to say though that we are back under sail. It was interesting seeing how quickly the sea flattened out during the heavy rain. This was of course after I had fought against the earlier waves to provide a full Sunday breakfast!
All on watch today have got wet through as just putting yourself outside of the shelter of the spray hood means a soaking very quickly. Joe and Mark have resorted to swim shorts with their rain jackets.
I have just checked the radar and our course takes us through more red blobs so a wet night looks likely.

Here's to finding the sun again tomorrow!
