Second Wind - Message from Chris Diggins

Dawn of the Cruising Chute

On our boat the Cruising Chute usually hides in the sail locker only to be brought out to provide amusement to onlookers on the odd occasion that we attempt to fly it. In the past this exercise has only confirmed that there's a lot to go wrong and very little to be gained by its use.

Where better to discover that it does actually work than in the middle of the Atlantic with no onlookers on the horizon in any direction and the ideal light breeze?

Rigging the chute as recommended in a conversation with the other Moody 425 (Freebooter), we were able to convert a sad "nearly 4 knots" to a cracking 7.5, rekindling our hopes that the ARC events list for St Lucia was not just a chronicle of things we would miss! Getting the sail down again when the snuffer jammed at the top is another story but as I said, there was nobody on the horizon to see it.

Chris
