The Marina de Lagos has been the finish port host of the ARC Europe for many years and is the perfect place to complete your crossing of the North Atlantic. It is your gateway not only to the Algarve, which is a wonderful place to explore, but also the start of your adventure in the Med.
While Marina de Lagos is one of the best modern marinas in Europe, Lagos town has a long history that can be seen in the varied architecture. The Forte do Registo is on the waterfront near the entrance to the harbour and makes for a grand entrance to the walled city of Lagos which has over 2000 years of history. Interestingly the small beach next to the marina entrance is called Praia de Batata, or potato beach, as there were so many potato peelings washing up from the nearby garrison!
It was from the Algarve that the first caravels of the Portuguese era of discovery were to set sail in the 15th Century and as the ARC Europe yachts arrive at the welcome pontoon they will pass a replica of the caravel Boa Esperança (Good Hope). Prince Henry the Navigator developed the vessels that would be used to explore the oceans and it is hard to imagine how different life at sea would have been for the early explorers.
