Hejira - Mindelo at last

16 53.214N 024 59.487WSunday 15th November 2015Quite an interesting arrival in the Cape Verde Islands with none of the charted navigational lights working and the island inside which we had to finish at 11.31pm showing as nothing more than a menacing  presence. The stowing of the sails and preparation for berthing was surprisingly slick given that the wind chose to pipe up just as we crossed the line. We took our berth alongside Lea who preceded us in and we managed to down a few beers in the floating bar before they closed. It seems that few yachts managed the passage without using the engine so it will be interesting to see how the organisers arrange the positions after the deadline for finishing at 5pm tonight. We all slept very well, assisted no doubt by our celebratory. read more...

Widago - Father's Day 2015

Father’s Day 2015 OK… Before we start, go grab a coffee (or beer if you’re in the right time zone) and put your feet up because this might take a few minutes. Been a very busy Father’s Day… First of all, justa big Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there, especially ours: Popeye & Granddaddy Pawpaw. thanks for your love, support, and awesomeness. …it all started out with a best of intentions, in the wee hours. At this lat/long, sunrise is at 3:30am, which means the skies begin to get dusty by 1:30. My normal night shift has me on lookout for pirates, vessels, and weather from 11-3. So lucky for me, I’m the only one these days who is on watch in the pitch dark and pitching seas. Normally, I hear Ahab begin rumbling by about quarter ’til, my drooping eyelids yearning for the sleep.. read more...

Gozwoz - Stop Press! The Incident of the Bucket

Some of the qualities of the Bosun will have become apparent to the reader over the last few weeks. Resourcefulness has been mentioned. A willingness to lead with his head has been mentioned. Also there is a tendency towards hyperactivity. Finally there is a desire to excel, if possible on a public stage. We were motoring towards the mainland, having crossed the shipping lanes and were looking forward to our first view of the cliffs of Southern Portugal when the Navigator, who was engaged on the swimming platform in scrubbing the fenders which had become encrusted with chicken manure in Ponta Delgada, dropped the bucket he was using which floated off behind the boat. Instantly the crew went into man overboard mode, OGL kept his eyes on the precious object and directed the skilful Coxswain. read more...

Gozwoz - Days 5 and 6 from Santa Maria

Last night the Navigator had the good fortune to sleep, though not simultaneously, with both the Bosun and Roger, who kindly allowed me to share their double berth in the stern while we were sailing upwind and they were respectively on watch. It was good to sleep somewhere that did not involve episodes of weightlessness as the bow came down. The Bosun, who seems to have kept a possessive eye on proceedings, commented that the Navigator was appropriately positioned on his edge of the bed, as he had been trained, but that Roger was in the middle. Her explanation was that the Navigator was monopolising the duvet. That allegation, which is familiar to the Navigator, is no doubt relied upon by all women when appropriate.Sadly Our Great Leader did not have an enjoyable start to the day,. read more...

Widago - Azores-Europe Leg Day 8: Frogger in the English Channel

We are getting close, well closer. The target/destination changes daily, sometimes hourly depending Ahab's strategy and information. After 42 years as the youngest child of three, and almost 20 years in the Moseley clan, I have very little problem just going with the flow. In this case, where the tide takes me - literally. Today's updated target, as of thirty minutes ago, is now to all the way into, and maybe even through, the Kiel Canal. I was only slightly let down, as I had fantasized about a spot of afternoon tea with my pinky out, the other hand cramming crumpets with strawberries & cream in my face. But the UK will just have to wait. In the meantime, we have to get our game face on. We are just entering the English Channel. After weeks of crossing the open ocean (as D-Bro. read more...

Gozwoz - Day 4 from Santa Maria

The Bosun's reason for being on the rally is that he wanted some proper ocean sailing which the westward ARC had not provided. He then complained that the previous legs on ARC Europe had not provided what he wanted. He accepts that the present conditions are meeting his expectations, although they are not such as to induce merriment.Since 4pm yesterday we have been sailing on a course for Cape St Vincent hard into a NNE wind of F4/5. The sea is choppy and GOZWOZ is going at it like a lopsided hobby horse, albeit a very seaworthy one. While the conditions are no worse than you might find in the Irish Sea with the same wind, coping with them for the unexpected 48 hours or so is the challenge. The positive factor is that we are making good speed and preserving our northing. An arrival late. read more...

Widago - Azores-Europe Leg Day 8: Part Two

Bless his little heart.....Get a load of this freeloadin', hitchhikin' stowaway. I think the term "bird brain" may need to be reviewed by Mr. Webster and his etymologists. Clearly, this little fella is no dummy. Guyon found him hiding in a perfect spot - he could have been there for days. We have these small alcoves in the forward cockpit where Peter the Pigeon was convalescing. In calmer, downwind sailing we might be hanging out forward, but we have been moving along at a pretty smart clip, somewhat close reaching, so no one is going forward. Except for Ahab. He was exercising his OCD prerogative, washing the exterior windows. And whaddaya know? He came across this little fella, all snugged up hiding out and hitching a ride. Poor Peter probably plunked down to rest his weary hollow. read more...

Jambo - heading for NW Spain

Well it's looking very unlikely that we can make Falmouth- Stokey our friendly weather router tells us that the forecasting model is showing no significant wind for 8 days( aargh beam me up Scottie ) which means we have to head for Spainso Jambo can have a holiday . Bob says "wherever Jambo goesVigo "(get it ?)We are snookered as we have had to use fuel to get through the High pressure ridge only to find that it has now extended....that's sailing ! You can have a better understanding as to why steam power won that race .Moral ok but some decent winds from a good direction would help although Yesterday our excellent galley chef, John prepared the Tuna that jumped on Toms tackle with a delicious salsa - we decided to put him through to the next round of Jambo Masterchef although he. read more...

Widago - Azores-Europe Leg: Day 6

All is calm and quiet out here. Really calm. Been motoring through flat glassy seas for a couple days now. Finally saw some marine life today, as we caught a glimpse of a playful pod of dolphin and more pilot whales. Last night at dinner, we had a pilot whale roll though only a few meters from the starboard hull. Just a bit too close for my comfort, but she seemed to have the distance all worked out.Been playing lots of family Gin Rummy and backgammon. Took on the battle of the port hull staterooms and heads. Yuck, but now much better. Greatly decreased the mold, mildew, and dust bunny population over there. With the calm conditions, I've been "allowed" by Ahab to run laundry, which is a win-win for all of us.Gordon consistently has the biggest laundry pile.Tomorrow just might have to be. read more...

Unconditional - Azorean high

Tuesday, June 16, 2015 ½-Way to Portugal – well, almost! My unofficial Sunday weather outlook continues to come to fruition in spite of the optimistic WRI-generated weather reports of 12-17 knots NNE. We are encountering winds of what Walt describes as ‘light & variable.’ This morning, Evan & I tried to sail in 6-8 knots of wind, but it was on the nose with VMG of less than the penalized motoring time, so after 3+ hours, we turned on the engine again like most everyone else. For those following us on the WCC or Yellowbrick website, WCC combined Class 1B & 1C into one class for award purposes. Yes, we are indeed leading the entire pack, but it is the SAILING lead that counts, not engine lead, and the challenge will be the potential high winds and current 300-miles off Portugal. read more...

Unconditional - So much for the 'free ride'

Wednesday, June 17, 2015 Anticipate Lagos Arrival on Fri, June 19th Finally, winds kicked in last night from the NE, forcing us to sail below 90-degrees magnetic. Twice, we shortened sails, and as of this morning we are under a double-reefed main and a reefed Yankee, clawing to stay above the Cape Vincent-desired Rhumb line. Commercial traffic (to Halifax, in this case) is only 2-nm south of us.You may have noticed that due to rhumb line pinching, we have lost some time to the more northerly WCC boats although we are currently sailing 5.5 to 7.5-knts over ground. The 18-24 knot sustained northerly winds have kicked up some 9+ foot swells that we are taking on our port quarter, but fortunately the swells are more rhythmic than the choppy US Gulfstream last month. It is too early to tell. read more...

Agua Dulce - Green Flash and Glassy Seas...Until now

Two nights I saw something for the first time - the GREEN FLASH! It is real for all you doubters out there, like I once was. All four of us saw it - it was completely emerald green right as the sun went below the horizon for about a second. I tried to capture the sunset on my camera, but sadly, you can't see the flash. The boys on S/V Tara saw it too - and no one had anything to drink stronger than Coca Cola!Until today, we've had amazing glassy seas which make for gorgeous sunsets reflecting over the still water. BUT, they are noisy sunsets as the motor drones on and on and on in the background. We've been heading NE so that when the winds pick up - they have now! - and we approach the coast of Portugal, we'll be in place for a nice beam reach in NE winds down to Lagos. We'll also have. read more...

Jambo - between the devil and the deep blue sea

Well the wind ran out and the fog descended, although the sun tried to get through.Wellout of range of the fashion police some top outfits came out today including birthday suits ! Management advised crew that cold showers on deck would be acceptable so out came the sea shampoo and given that we could only sail at 1.5/2.5 knots there was.little happening.A really massive area of no wind is developing in front of us which could well present us with a major problem. Plan B is being worked on but NW Spain looks an option as no wind is likely for the next 7/8 days if we stick to plan A - blistering barnacles, half rations Mr Christian With the arrival of dawn we set course for NW Spain and will now motor until we pick up the Northerly windsThe good news is Toms tackle is working- he bought. read more...

Dala - From Harry on Dala...you said Tai Chi ?

Hi there, happy blog readers allover the worldJust a few words to share with you a long story which has ended right now.As my brother told you a few days ago, we have been dreaming of sailing over the oceans since a very very long time. Moitessier, Slocum, Wakelam, and so many great sailor have modeled our young minds. When I was 17, I saw once on TV a film about Tai Chi Chuan, (yes you know it, these chinese people who are moving slowly in a sort of strange fight in slow motion early in the morning). At that time, I have been been fascinated by this video where it was said Tai chi is a very ancient taoist martial art which gave birth to all the others. Then I thought "yes, this is the solution to prevent the atrophy of the muscles during a long sail travel ! One day I will learn this. read more...

Dala - There's nothing like family!

Hi All,Everything is OK on board, no worry! We are in our second sailing day in this third and last leg of our Atlantic crossing. We had a crew change in the Azores. Our talented crew Richard flew back home, in the US. And my brother Harry together with my brother-in-law Robert joined DALA.So, with my Lady Joelle and myself, we are now four onboard, a family only crew. And that's great! There is nothing like family! But you know, the events in life of each one of us and the globalization process are separating us. Some are living in some remote country, some are very successful in their careers and seldom available and so on.It is therefore a very precious moment to meet together, not for a brief drink, but 24 hours together on the same boat, very few internet, only some marine radio, no. read more...

Gozwoz - Day 2 from Santa Maria

A day of motoring in a flat sea that often resembled a mirror. We are getting good efficiency from the diesel engine in this sea and are using about 2-3 litres fuel per hour whilst still getting 6-7 knots of forward motion. The main event today was the sighting of two whales - not so much a sighting because the first was only 20 metres from the bow coming across from starboard to port, the second seen a few minutes later only 40 metres from our stern on the same course as the first. Majestic creatures, they both had prominent fins, the first being smaller. The weather is agreeing with the GRIB files for once and we are still making a little northing in preparation for our southerly turn towards Lagos.. read more...

Gozwoz - Day 3 from Santa Maria

We have now been motoring for two days and have covered over 300 miles of the 800 or so to Lagos. There has been a slight change in the wind, which has not been over F2 for some time, and which went to the NE at 7/8 knots. We tried to sail this but our course was well to the south of Cape St Vincent which we must round before reaching Lagos and returned to motoring after a short while to preserve our northing. Other yachts in our vicinity have gone through the same process and we have seen three crossing our stern from north to south while attempting to make progress under sail. Most appear to have given up.There is nothing much to report from yesterday. The only newsworthy events were the appearance of two whales and in the same area a pod of dolphins engaged in fishing, that is. read more...

Dala - The Azores cruise plus a weird story!

Hi, allHere we are, back at sea, a very calm sea today, our first sailing day bound Marina de Lagos, Portugal, after a very pleasant cruise in the Azores Islands. We visited four islands, out of the nine composing this archipelago:- Faial, where we made our landfall, in Horta.- Terceira, where we had a look at the traditional bull fight and had a nice tour.- Sao Miguel, the main island, there we docked at the Ponta Delgada Marina.- And the small and charming Santa Maria island, our jumping point toward PortugalWe arrived in Horta on May 31st, so we spent 14 days in the Azores. But this was definitely too short. I would have spent easily more than a month or two there. Why? Again, just like in Bermuda, but in a different way, adorable people! Free Spirit - Log 31 - an unfortunate incident

I share the concerns of the Captain about the everincreasing odd and obsessive behavior of the Chief Engineer.  I am also alittle surprised and concerned at my own reaction to thatbehaviour. Today, after lunch, the engine was turned off sothat the oil could be checked.  The Chief Engineer was clearly disappointedand somewhat agitated to learn that whipper-snapper, and not the Chief Engineer, would be checking the oil.  The galley was then fully occupied,whipper-snapper sitting on the floor reaching into the engine compartmentchecking the oil and me at the sink drying the last few dishes.  The ChiefEngineer suddenly decided that he wanted to recheck the couplings attaching theengine to the propeller shaft - no harm in that but absolutely no urgencyeither.  However,. read more...

Jambo - homeward bound

Well we leftThe Azores this morning and motored NW as we are in search of wind......light winds from the west filled in so we were able to sailalbeit at Variable speeds. As we start to head North the change in temperature does give Tom and I the opportunity to break out our summer designer collection- standards will be high as John is very fashion conscious although strutting around on deck in his underpants and tee shirt was a bit worrying- Jambo is not that sort of boat.!,Anyway young Edge has been sent to his bunk early for this strange behaviourTom is turning into quite a master chef producing seared tuna steakswith a foam jus and creamed potatoes - his fishing tackle remains of no interest to the fish of the North Atlantic so we had to eat fish purchased from the market yesterday.. read more...

Miracles will never cease. At around midnight theloom of the lighthouse on Cape St. Vincent, the most southwesterly point ofcontinental Europe, lit up the night sky over the bow. Free Spirit, and hermotley crew of vagabonds, thieves and Carole are back! This news is sureto be greeted with great joy in the old country. I expect the bunting willbe out and there will be and music and dancing in the streets. Theexcitement of the young women who have been emailing the young whipper-snapperevery day - sometimes several times a day -must be boundless. Perhaps DavidCameron will order a public holiday and Her Majesty will send us a note ofcongratulation. Widago - Azores-N. Europe Leg: Night 4

High pressure systems continue to dominate our Atlantic crossing. The sailing has actually been quite good as long as still counts if we are motor sailing. Been keeping one engine going, with full sails up, through calm, sometimes glassy waters. Winds continue to be light, variable, and still somewhat on the nose or close hulled. Luckily before we settled on sailing around the globe, we were going to do it in a trawler, so I guess we get the best of both worlds here. The best being that with one engine going at all times, there is always scalding hot water to burn the crap out of you while showering. We finally caught a fish today - as wrangled in the photo with Gordon. I guess though, the accurate statement would be that the fish caught us. This was probably the biggest flying fish I've. read more...

Gozwoz - Roger and the Red Light

The marina at Vila do Porto was well run and we were extremely well looked after. As is usual the pontoons were fitted with electric sockets and water pipes which were mounted on posts at regular intervals, each post having a light on top. All the lights in the posts were white with one exception, that was the one by our stern which was red, apparently advertising the presence of someone of loose morals on GOZWOZ. Our last night at Vila do Porto involved a barbecue at the Club Naval and traditional dancing, which turned out to be a very competent musical duo. Roger was of course dolled up in going out mode. On our return to GOZWOZ a digestive (drink not biscuit) was being enjoyed in the cockpit. I am pleased to say that we had a number of enquiries from other returning yachties as to. read more...

Last night his head appeared in thecompanionway demanding to check the engine oil. What's wrong withthat? you might say. "He is Chief Engineer after all". Well, nothingexcept that it was around midnight and the oil had been checked just afew hours earlier. Thinking he must have been havinga nightmare about engine failure with a massive supertankerbaring down upon us at a rate of knots -  or something of the sort - Ireassured him everything was OK and suggested he go back to bed, which heeventually did. But not, unfortunately, before waking the Judge. read more...

Agua Dulce - Azores Cruise

We depart this morning from Santa Maria, the last stop in our Azores cruise. Again, the people of the islands have been nothing but friendly, warm and inviting. I definitely hope to return to visit here again someday. Terceira was yet another beautiful island with rolling green fields and beautiful hydrangeas, azaleas, and other flowers. The main town, Angra do Heroismo, has a very old world feel to it. There are no modern buildings - everything is beautifully maintained as it was built originally soon after it was discovered by the Portuguese explorers in the late 1400’s. The buildings are painted in soft colors and most have decorative iron window sashes lined with colorful flowers. We enjoyed some wonderful local “comfort food” called Alcatra, which is the Terceiran version of. read more...
