Jus' do it 5 - LOG Day 11- Major Setback-RACE OVER

Friday 7th December 2012

1200hrs GMT (8th December) - miles in last 24 hours -

POSITION;15' 55' 591 N, 048' 49.223W

Late morning we decide to hoist the genaker - the big white blooter. We even got 9 knots wind from the N and we're cruising along nicely at 7/71/2 knots. It's still a fairly flat sea, the sun is splitting the skies and it's hot, hot, hot - we could do with some more breeze. In the afternoon the wind dies away, then starts to fill in again from the N , 13-15 knots. Speed increases to 9-10,1/2 knots - everyone enjoyijng the sail. We decide to play safe, however, and drop the blooter before sunset. With all hands on deck the drop goes well without a hitch. We commence our watch system for the night.
At approximately 0215hrs in 20 knots of wind, Gordon and Annie here a ' pop'. When Annie investigates with the torch she sees the boom has cracked open on the underside just aft of the tang. An immediate cry for all hands on deck sees everyone up in seconds. The crack quickly tears and the boom scissors. The crew secure the aft end of the boom, drop the mainsail and strap it down on the deck. A good damage limitation exercise is complete very swiftly with no injuries sustained - we will complete further remedial works in daylight. We proceed under headsail doing a steady 71/2 knots in approximately 22 knots of wind.
