Great Escape of Southampton - Day 10 Great Escape 16 09N 39 46W

Day 10

What an eventful day …….!  It all started very well indeed, with the forecast for little wind and motoring being replaced by steady 25 knot winds from just the right direction and Great Escape doing 8 to 10 knots.  With less swell as well, it has been a very good day’s sailing.  Once again, the night sailing was fantastic – with no moon it was like driving your car with the lights off but with no risk of hitting anything.  And the stars were amazing!

We celebrated the halfway stage in our epic voyage with fish soup made by Jan and Kaare, and it was really good (even with the cauliflower included in the recipe).  That was followed by apricot crumble and custard, and some bubbly.  We were regaled by Kaare singing Kalinka in Russian – what more can you say…..!

During the night we saw a tanker called Carla, crossing our path – I could smell the steak and chips from 2 miles away!

On the other hand, this morning has not been quite so good.  About an hour ago we smelt something burning and tracked it down to a main circuit breaker.  All was quickly brought under control and the main impact is no water maker for the rest of the trip.  Never mind, it’s going to rain, so we’ll get a cool shower anyway!  Watch this space for an update!!
