Rivendell - Log Day 1 - "Go Kart Mayhem"

Sunday, 25 Nov 2012
Well it was a beautiful day in Las Palmas, but serious storms were brewing
off shore. The racing division (about 36 boats) took off at noon with large
crowds and several bands from the local community to cheer them on. While
the cruising division was advised to stay in the harbor and let the storm
winds (50 mph and 20 foot seas) pass. So the remaining 200 boats in the
fleet will leave on Tuesday for St Lucia.

By the way let me introduce the boat and crew: "Rivendell" is an 82 foot
sailing yacht, built in the United Kingdom by Oyster Marine, it is U S
flagged. Aboard are two Americans: Schaefer (the owner), and Bruce; from
Gibralter is Ben the skipper, from the United Kingdom are Miles, Beau, Andy,
and Ian; from Germany is Dom (Dominik); and finally our cook is Taryn who is
from the Republic of South Africa.

Because we stayed in port we decided to rent two cars and do some sight
seeing of the island and do some go kart racing (friendly competition of
course). We had three very competitive races - there really wasn't a clear
winner - but a lot of fun was had by all. The track was very spacious and
nicely landscaped. The karts were quite fast - the drivers were doing a lap
in about 60 to 64 seconds. Everyone left with a complimentary picture of
them burning up the track - so the next time you see one of the crew - ask
to see the picture.
Cheers!
