Voyageur - Leg 3 - Log 2 - Keeping ahead of the weather

12 June

It has been three days of hard sailing, in winds on or forward of the beam. Last night we had the strongest blow with winds gusting to 30 knots true for a couple of hours and all day today we have had consistent winds of 20 to 25 knots so our progress is good. But with the winds blowing out of the northwest we have seas which are moderate to rough and life is a little testing down below. We move around carefully, always one hand for the boat, as she slides down off a wave. I am frustrated that I cannot blog but now I have to prioritize, eating and sleeping being the most important aspects to concentrate on. It is wonderful and an absolute luxury to have the extra rest with Donald on board. Yesterday the grib files showed a weakening of the low but this morning it is strengthening again so we will definitely head for Finisterre. Although several days away from now a lot can change but it is the topic of conversation on the daily SSB net which our small group of boats have continued to run. One boat is soldiering bravely on course north east to Falmouth, although looking at our grib file it looks as though he is going to end up slap bang in the middle of the low. Halo decided this morning to divert from their rhumb line course to Falmouth and along with ourselves, PInta, Emilia,(heading ultimately for Dublin) and Endo 2 (who are taking it easy with a broken stay), we are all heading east to La Coruna. With all haste we have to keep the speed up but a current is always against us. I try not to think about the difference it would make if it was in our favour, however our mileage is still much improved upon from our Bermuda to Azores daily runs.
