Brizo - BVI to Bermuda Day 5 (Monday) – Wind & Birthdays

Since the last blog we have had great winds F4/5 from the East, all night and up until 12:00 Monday (local). The Grib file weather sent to us daily predicted a small low / front that we thought we would hit early this morning and would change the wind through our nose to the North East. At 12:10 today that happened, a classic front that veered the wind from West to North East (almost 140 degrees) in literally minutes. So we effectively tacked while still remaining on the same point of sail to Bermuda ! Its tighter to the wind and we now have the blade jib out. Winds are still robust, we have water over the decks constantly now and in 3 hours we will have sailed for 24 hours solid since last running the engine.

We have had one piece of damage when a leach line on the jib managed to tie itself to another rope in the wind and it started to tear the rear of the sail, luckily we were able to cut the line loose while standing in a lot of water balanced between the guard rail and jib. The tear is only to the leach and not a structural part of the Vektron sail, we can repair it in Bermuda.

We have seen the odd distant ship pass by, one to the USA and one towards Portsmouth UK, other than that we have seen no other vessels for three days. Its overcast and rainy today and getting slightly colder as we head North.

It was good to hear the cat ‘Field Trip’ on yesterdays evening Long Range SSB call so all was well and they and one or two others seem determined to motor the absolute minimum, which is always good to see but they are likely to get one day less in Bermuda, but they have probably been there on the way down from USA.

Murray is hoping to Kite Surf for a day in Bermuda as winds there are usually very good, he has bought the kite all the way over from UK and just needs to ‘blag’ a board (I think is the expression he would use).

At this rate we should arrive in Bermuda late afternoon Tuesday allowing us two days to complete any repairs, top off tanks and complete some work work.

No news yet on the imminent arrival of our first Grandchild expected any day. We are sort of hoping it arrives on the 9th which is Pat’s birthday or quite late so we are back from the USA trip – but that’s asking a lot !

Stu.
