BRIZO - Daily Log, Thursday, March 22, 2012

Its been a few days since we last sent an update so I include all our exciting news in this log. Unfortunately, we will not make it to Hiva Oa today. The winds disappeared early yesterday morning and we sailed for most of the day at a painstaking slow pace. We have 79 miles to go and will plan to get into Hiva Oa very early tomorrow morning.

On Tuesday, we finally caught another fish! As Audrey and Kathryn describe it, "it was the most beautiful turquoise, green, blue and yellow 43" Mahi Mahi." It was very tasty! We had sashimi as an appetizer and nice fillets for dinner last night. Hubs rigged up a new lure and with any luck we'll catch another fish before we arrive in Hiva Oa.

We set the spinnaker for the second time on this leg on Tuesday. We had light winds and the spinnaker did a nice job until the halyard broke. The spinnaker ended up completely submerged in the water and it took all hands to ready the boat and haul the spinnaker out of the water. No damage to the spinnaker and only one damaged halyard. We were lucky.

The girls have been spending most of their time working on their reports and few other school subjects. Part of the 4th grade curriculum is to do an extensive report on a "notable woman". Kathryn is reporting on Michelle Obama and has read several books about Mrs. Obama's life. 3rd grade works on a state report that covers information from early history to natural resources to climate variations and everything in between. Audrey selected Florida for her report and is just about done. Its a lot of work and the final copy is written in cursive writing! Both Audrey and Kathyrn have worked very hard on these reports and we'll mail the reports to their teachers when we reach Hiva Oa.

Its been a relatively easy passage but we all anxious to get on dry land! I am hoping my next log entry will be from a cafe in Hiva Oa drinking something other than water!
