Samsara - Snorkelling then onward.......

April 1

On Friday we went snorkelling at the bay at Tahuata - saw a number of angelfish that were just beautiful as well as a lot of other fish. Walking along the volcanic outcroppings along one side of the bay there were fish and eels in the rock pools. When we swam back to the boat Lee stayed in the water to do a bit of bottom cleaning and a small (4-5 ft) manta ray swam by.

After the day snorkelling and playing on the beach we intended to sail south overnight to another island, but when we pulled out and unrolled the genoa to head south the intermediate shroud on the port side snapped. It was the fitting at the top of the shroud that broke, not the wire. Both the fittings and wire were replaced in October so it's surprising that it failed so quickly. So we furled, and turned north to make our way to Nuka Hiva, the capital of the Marquesas and our best chance for getting the part fixed. We stopped last night at a small island (Ua Pou) then continued on today to Nuka Hiva. We arrived around 5pm and so anchored but haven't gone to shore yet.

It seems unlikely we can get the part here but perhaps we can have it sent from Tahiti (or Lee can fly down and get it...). We'll find out tomorrow.
