BRIZO - 31 March

It is early Saturday morning and we find ourselves anchored in Hanavave Bay on Fatu Hiva. This is the most beautiful place we have seen so far on our journey, a small bay tucked inside a mountainous entrance with intense green tropical foliage growing from the sea shore to the top of the mountains. There is a small, very tidy settlement here, friendly people with a feeling of comparative prosperity. There are no shops or restaurants but the village is connected by a winding mountain road to another village on the south end of the island where residents can buy their supplies. Even so, we were offered fresh fruit and fish from the local residents mostly wanting to trade for rum! We were also invited into the home of a wood carver to see her wares, we bought a distinctive ebony bowl with Polynesian-style sea turtle heads as handles.

A couple of days ago we became friends with the owners and crew of a 150 ft superyacht named CHRISTOPHER. The owners are Americans from Texas but they just had this yacht built in the UK last year and are cruising the world along with their onboard crew of ten. They have a seven year old son who has become good friends with Kathryn and Audrey and our girls have spent a couple of afternoons on board with him. Yesterday they invited us over for dinner, they were very gracious hosts and we had a delightful time. The yacht was built by the Pendennis yard in the south of England and is very beautiful, a new yacht designed in a classic style by Ron Holland.

This morning we plan to hike to the waterfall on the island, we've been told it's an arduous trip but well worth it. The Marquesan government has plans to build a small hydroelectric plant using the energy from the waterfall to help provide electricity to the island and we have seen some of the initial construction.

Later today we intend to depart for the main port on Fatu Hiva for fuel and re-provisioning, it is 125 miles away and we plan to sail overnight to arrive Sunday morning. We expect to spend two days on Fatu Hiva and then depart for the Tuamotu Islands on Tuesday.
