Cleone - Leg 24 Day 12 - Too Fast!

You won't hear that from me very often.

But the plain fact is, we are going too fast at the moment.  It is eight-thirty, Tobago time, and we have 106 miles to run.  Even at five knots, we will arrive early in the morning, and well before Customs and Immigration opens at 8 o'clock.  And, assisted by the current which has returned in our favour, we are doing between 7 and 8 knots over the ground at the moment.  If we get in early, the threat is that we have to pay overtime to the Customs and Immigration officials, reported by Kealoha 8 as US$60.  The Skipper is a Scot (so he claims - Ed), so this is an anathma to him.  But there is a Cunning Plan (there is always a Cunning Plan).  The trick will be our choice of when to slow down.  On Sunday, Bruce predicted lighter winds today, though the wind shows no sign of easing at the moemnt.  But we don't want to be becalmed and have to motor.  So, the plan is this.  Once the weather forecast arrives, which should be shortly after this message goes out, we will take a decision then!  Simple, eh?

Well perhaps.  Maybe the wind will not ease, and we will hurled, willy nilly, towards Tobago at this break-neck pace for the rest of the day.  Maybe not; the wind will ease or we will heave-too and await the dawn.  But whatever, we will let you know how it goes - the traditional arrival e-mail will wing its way towards you in due course.

And we are not too thrilled with the thought of the Skipper's Corned Beef Hash again.  We will have to get to work on him and see if he can be a bit more adventurous.  (But the locker is almost bare except for tins of corned beef and diced mixed veg - Ed).

Meanwhile, all is well with us, and very best wishes to you all.
