Kasuje - Log 16th August

Hi, from skipper Steve
We are now two days into the passage north up the Queensland coast to Thursday Island, which is on the eastern tip of Oz just before the Torres straight.
After our great time in Sydney,Cairns and Oz I was sad and low when Anne, Jenny, Mike, Chris, Dawn and Robert left at Marlin Marina and felt very home sick after their departure, but I've pulled myself together and apart from a raging sore throat and cold I'm on top form again.
(Although it does seem a long time and a lot of miles until I will be home at Christmas.)
We all had a great time whether on land or sea and really thank them for making this period of the journey so enjoyable and such great fun. Hopefully Dawn and Robert will be able to rejoin Kasuje for the trip across the Atlantic next year. Let's hope so.
Philip and his new crew have now joined us and are settling in to life afloat and enjoying the comforts! of Kasuje. We are two days out of Cairns anchored up off a small island named Lizard with 5 other WARC yachts. I think they enjoyed the passage but all felt a little nauseas when nightfall hit and they experienced their first night sailing. Fortunately the conditions have been strong but the seas relatively calm and we had a stonker of a downwind sail covering 113nm in the last 13 hrs, all under the light of a full moon. I managed to break my rules again and we anchored up at about midnight, in the dark, in a strange harbour!! The approach however was quite straight forward and the anchor lights of the other yachts led us in. All was well and after a good nights rest we can now enjoy today at anchor with some diving and snorkeling. We have been informed that due to the dangers of 6 meter salt water crocodile lurking in the depths, we should not swim or snorkel after we leave this island. But we have all seen Crocodile Dundee and he was not fazed!!
The passage within the barrier reef has so far proved great fun with a little more navigation required than our normal ocean sailing. Fortunately Richard who is with us has just completed his RYA day skipper course and is mustard keen to practice his new skills!! Whales dolphins and a turtle have been spotted with two huge specimens surfacing within 50 metres of Kasuje quite disconcerting but I think they had spotted us and just liked to startle.
(This particular incident is not covered in the RYA hand book!!)
We will be setting off in the morning to make Thursday island for the scheduled rendezvous on the 20th and then it's the passage to Darwin.
All well with Kasuje
Kind Regards
Skipper Steve
