Makena - Pacific Crossing Day 4

I’m writing this after my watch to start day 5 of this crossing. The waves are much smaller as the wind is less but I still managed to get 20nm extra behind us during the 2 hours I had the helm. For me it is really to strange to think about the fact that on this three thousand mile journey, twenty miles in two hours is really the best we can hope for. It seems so little but I do realize that there are boats in the fleet that would be happy with half of that progress. Their journey will be twice as long as ours, twice as many meals to make and days of sleep with all the noises of boat and sea. Anyway, at the start of my watch our “track” of the path travelled so far according to GPS was 999nm. So we are over one thousand miles from anywhere now. The sun is rising behind me and the moon has been making night watches very pleasant. As I took over from Dave at 4am he pointed out the Southern Cross to portside and the Plough to starboard. We could see Venus very clearly around sunset.

Oliver made a great dinner for us last night and I made some Zabaglione later for a treat or any excuse to practice that one really since we had enough eggs.

Given that Kai was hanging to be put to bed, I couldn’t listen in on the SSB evening call at the end of Day 4 but Luc did the honors and it seems that 2 of the boats have managed to damage their front sails - their genoas. That means their journeys will taken them longer than expected also.

We have a new boat joining the fleet and we’re all waiting to hear them on the SSB for the first time. They are quite far north as they left from San Diego to meet us in Hiva-Oa.

Well, I’m off to make a steamed milk using a fantastic purchase that was prompted by a delicious cappuccino experience when I got to go aboard the gorgeous yacht Juno of London back near Isla Mogo Mogo in Las Perlas! Let’s see what day five brings… we’ll have to thirds left to go by lunch time so that will be reason to celebrate. I’m thinking tahitian french toast which for me means french toast with a banana walnut spread in the middle - a good excuse to use up some bananas.

Hi to everyone. I hope these blogs are getting through - not for the drivel but just so that you know that we are all more than fine!
