Aretha - Day Three - Safety First

Cruising along on a beam reach at 8 knots, Aretha is on course for St Lucia. We have just enjoyed a delicious leek and potato soup and freshly made bread thanks to Jani our watch leader and expert chef. All participated in lunch during happy hour which celebrated the changing of the clocks by one hour. Crew members who had suffered from bouts of sea sickness have now found their sea legs

The skipper insists on safety. Life jackets on at all times night and day. Life lines when on when moving around the deck and at night. Children secured to lifelines at all times. Rig checks every day which has revealed some necessary repairs. Everything secured below decks and sail plan adjusted to suit the current conditions and the conditions expected from reading the weather forecast. Sleep now is easier in spite of a rocking and rolling yacht and crying and fighting kids. It’s surprising what you get used to. We have settled in as a team and each of us know the part we have to play as a result of frequent skipper briefings.

We are not near the front runners, but we are doing well and are a happy ship. The first two days were full- on getting, used to night watches and the daily routine of sailing, cooking and cleaning and maintenance. We have plenty of times for contemplation particularly at night under a start sky. Last night we experiences some squalls with winds up to 30 knots.

We plough on deep into the mighty Atlantic ocean, now on our own with no other yachts or ships in site.
