Winedown - Into The Wind

Sunday, Day 7
Looking at the Yellow Brick at the zig zag of boats along the line to the mark, its clear we are all struggling getting to our destination, some of us more than others.  Seems that this is going to take a little longer than anticipated.  This is disconcerting for me, being new to the provisioning of a boat because we could have used another case of soda, another couple gallons of water and juice which I forgot to include. At this rate,  Its looking like we won’t cross the line until late Wednesday, early Thursday. Its actually a beautiful day for sailing, but because the wind is coming directly from where we want to go it has proven to be a day of little progress.  Since we have 416 nautical miles to go this is a frustrating prospect.

Adding to Sunday’s blog
As you can surmise Sunday didn’t start off to well, somewhat of what I would call a hump day.  Once some decisions were made as to what our thresholds were to motoring etc.,  a course was committed to head easterly with the hopes that the wind would clock around and take us more Southerly toward our mark.  For dinner we had the Buffalo Wild Wings that Dale brought on board, promising the franchise some pictures for the wall. Much went into this endeavor.  Dale even a test batch before hand. Buffalo Wild Wings has become one of Dale’s favorite hang outs for lunch since retiring. He is what you would call a regular. I have to admit that they were really tasty.  So the night improved and spirits were lifted as we went into our 7th. night. I had the first watch (really it’s the Koshy shift) from 6-9.  It was a beautiful, clear night sky, with so many stars and the luminescence of the plankton flickering green like fireflies dancing on the spray. Then the moon came up peeking through the towering cumulous nimbus clouds. It was what I had signed on for. We were motor sailing, although the wind did  clock back it didn’t back enough for us to get a good enough angle to cut the motor.

Monday, Day 8
Woke to the whir of the motor this morning. Still not able to get enough of an angle to cut the motor.  We did attempt to for about an hour but found ourselves getting pushed too far from our marked course. We are hoping that we are setting ourselves up into a good position for this evening if the wind continues to back making it a favorable run to the finish line!! We are currently in fourth place  and hoping to catch the Oyster in 3rd.

On a side note due to the conservation of water supplies, we have eliminated the use of the shower.  So we are down to using baby wipes. Oh and one more side bar, I reeled in a Mahi Mahi.  He was technically big enough to eat but we already have one waiting in in our fridge. I was given the choice to keep him or let him go.  He was so beautiful, all shimmery green with blue fins I just couldn’t bring myself to bring him in. I let him go. He or she was lucky in was me reeling him in because if it had been the boys he would not swam away. Okay, signing off to go deck side to enjoy this beautiful day.
