Firefly - Peter heading back to Blighty

The last few days in Bora Bora have been a eventful and a good way to finish off Peter's time on Firefly.

There has been lots of diving, Susie is well into her Open Water Course and rashly Peter and Paul signed up for a night dive. We with Stuart from Brizo shared the experience with fellow crews from Chika Lu , Alpheratz,Harry and Imogen from Hebe. This took us out to a coral outcrop within the main reef. After some initial jitters (from us all) it was not that scary and we settled into fantastic dive, saw lots of marine life in a new light aided by underwater torches. Coming up after 45 minutes we were all full of the experience and the chat continued over Happy Hour in the Maikai Yacht Club. The night dive formed part of Paul and Stuart's advanced dive certification. Sadly Peter has run out of dive time for this.

Peter's last set of two dives with Paul, Stuart, and Pat took us outside the reef to crystal clear water where we saw a Lemon and Blacked Tip shark. The second dive was over some beautiful coral inside the reef and after dropping down to a sandy valley saw a number of huge Manta Rays gracefully swimming along. We were accompanied on this dive by an underwater cameraman Stephane so much of the 'fun' is captured on dvd which we hope to share with others later.

Sadly Bora Bora is not the place Peter remembers from 20 years ago. It is still a very beautiful island but is now over developed with resort hotels and the level of petty crime on the boats is far greater than anywhere else we have visited. Fortunately we have not been affected by this but it suggests that there is an underlying social problem that the island must address.

Personal note from Peter:

So after 6 months of ocean living its time for Peter the leave Firefly and fly back to the real world. The trip covering over 11,000 nautical miles from when we left Salcombe has been memorable with many highlights which I hope we have shared with you in the logs . Sailing on Firefly has been a delight from the start, she has looked after us well and an opportunity of a lifetime. I will be eternally grateful to Paul and Susie for letting me share their Round the World adventure with them and I wish them the very best for their continued circumnavigation to New Zealand and beyond (much more about this in future logs). I am sure Grateful will remain in good hands. Paul and Suzana from WCC have also looked after us well and have enjoyed their company especially when we raced together around Tahaa. As for my future plans it will take some readjustment to living on land again but in my absence I have collected a few work commissions to quickly re-focus my attention . This should not be the end of my adventure and after returning to the UK will be considering (with Jane) ideas to restart my trip from Darwin in September.

Best Regards

Peter
