Firefly - Heading for Moorea

The last day at Rangiroa was spent diving the two passes, seeing more dolphins , sharks and a variety of tropical fish. David is an experienced hand at diving but for Paul and Peter after 10 dives are gradually gaining experience and confidence. At one point Taku our Japanese dive instructor had us doing somersaults and back rolls in 1000m of water; great fun! At sunset we joined a number of our rally mates on a beach for sundowners, chat and discussion of our future plans. At this type of informal gathering you get the true spirit and camaraderie of the rally. Many thanks for Ness and Sheldon on Nexus for organising this one. The evening finished off at Lilly's a local restaurant with Pat and Stewart from Brizo enjoying Mahi Mahi with either vanilla or curry sauce - delicious. Our bubbly host Lilly could not do enough for us and like many of the residents of the islands has left us with some very fond memories.

Bleary eyed we pulled up our anchor at 0600 this morning and sailed for an hour within the Lagoon of Rangiroa to the passe D'Avatoru arriving just before slack water. The pass is wider than the one we entered on Passe Tiputa and navigation out was pretty straight forward but as before we had to keep an eye on transit lines, a shallow section and some bumpy water just outside. Despite the state of the tide we still had 3 knots of current with us caused by the volume of water inside the lagoon. Once out we are sailing around the North West of island between Rangiroa and Tikehau . We are are enjoying more breeze than forecast and for most of the time are staying in front of passing rain squalls. Once clear of Tikehau we will steer a track straight South West for Moorea. Our passage should take around 35 hours and will be David and Peter's last overnight sail onboard for a while so we both hope its a good one under a full moon and no rain!
