Annabella - Log 12 Saturday 7th December

Position: 14 53.674N
38 22.612W

Distance to St Lucia: 1311
Distance since last log: 150NM

Despite our wishful thinking the wind during daylight yesterday was disappointingly light and similar to the previous few days. However, it started to pick up at around 2000 and has been consistently at 7-10, gusting  occasionally up to 12.5knots. Boat speed has been mostly in the 7-8 knot range hence the reasonable distance achieved since yesterday. We are still running with main and spinny with the wind at about 120 degrees off the port side. Based on our analysis of the grib files and ARC weather update we have decided to get further south. We may have suffered yesterday because we took too much westing the night before (irresistible) instead of getting further down. We should have reasonable wind today, but it might be light tomorrow. On Monday we hope to head straight to St Lucia with north easterlies. Here's hoping!

We didn't see any other traffic yesterday, but this morning a boat has appeared on the horizon (yet to be identified) heading more westerly than our course.

The spicy lamb was successful yesterday evening after our champagne reception to celebrate crossing the half way mark (thanks Stephen for the pink Moet). Definitely running short on fresh vegetables, but still have potatoes and lots of oranges and apples. The success story of the provisioning has been the potatoes (thanks Andy). They are so versatile. We have had mashed potatoes, whole potatoes, potatoes in stews and potato salad. The dutch guys on the pontoon in Las Palmas thought we were mad, but they are to be highly recommended for future ARCers. We have ample stocks of tinned food so we can start dipping into them from here on. We have enough frozen meat for the rest of the trip as well.

No fish for the past few days. We could do with maybe one ore two more before we reach our destination to supplement our diet (although not essential)

Happy to say that the frustration with lack of decent progress is dissipating and in a sense, while we want to get there, we will be sorry when it's over. Everyone is looking forward to seeing family and friends again for Christmas.

All the best from Annabella until tomorrow.

Peter, Craig, Conor, Stephen & Terry
