Ninfea - Arrival

Arrival!

After  almost five days of sailing this morning we will soon be making land in Mindelo, Cape Verde. The days have gone by very fast and quite smoothly. For four days we have sailed at an average speed of 7.8 kn, a remarkable speed for our Amel 53. With a twin poled headsail and a wind speed in the 13-20 kn we have reached speeds exceeding 10 kn for short periods and almost always near or above 8 kn. The last day, however, the wind dropped to a miserable 7 to 10 kn, cutting drastically into our average, which will still be well above 7 kn. Life on board has been very pleasant, good conversation, quiet reading and an occasional hectic moment to change or reset sails.

We have kept two rods out always, but the fishing has been modest. Two small dorados (mahi mahi) that have been promptly cooked to perfection by Marianto. The food on board merits a special mention. Yesterday, for instance, we had chicken curry, Caracas style rice and a new recipe that Marianto learned in the Canaries, garbanzada, chickpeas cooked in broth and savored with sausage and salami. Deeeelicious. And of course a bottle of Rias Baixas to wash it all down.

Fortunately, we did not experience any major failure, the only exception being the gear reducer on the main sail haul out motor. This is definitely one of the few  weak spots of the Amel 53. It did happen on our first ARC, with the difference that this time we came prepared with a jury rig and a spare reducer that we will install in Mindelo.

Tomorrow, rest and then in a few days  on to the next and final leg. St.Lucia!

15/11/2013 ARC PLUS

A domani Paolo
