Trillium - 3 Nov : Off with a Tangled Start!

We made the early Start out of the Elizabeth River yesterday with the rest of the fleet. However, as we were putting up the mainsail, it jammed so we crossed the Start Line with the Genoa and half of a main all crumpled up 3/4 of the way up the mast! Needless to say, as soon as we crossed the Start Line we started to dislodge the jam.

After much angst, Tom went up the mast and managed to untangle the top of the sail that had folded over on itself. We all sighed a sigh of relief and started out to see. We were well behind the fleet as we could see them nearing the Chesapeake Bay entrance. Once we finally got out of the Bay, a hot chicken and rice dinner was served and night watches began.

It was an interesting night with winds gusting to 30 kts and out of the North. At times, S/V Trillium was flying at 9.5 - 10 kns. That is fast for this big gal of a boat! The ride has been very rolly with 4-6 foot seas. It is still very rolly but the wind at 20 kts. So we are still moving well along the rhumb line. We are trying to pass between two eddies so we don't get caught in the Gulf Stream for too long. The sun is up and crew is climbing out of various secure places. It should be a good day. Life is good!
