Firefly - Leaving Portugal

We have just left Cascais heading out now on our longest leg to Lanzarote. Our stay here has been brief but we managed to do some exploring; its has a very impressive and well managed marina stacked out with super yachts. The town is attractive, full of traditional streets and squares and a bustling nightlife. After a traditional Portuguese supper last night we succumbed to an Irish bar and toasted absent friends and the next leg of our journey. We filled up with fuel and water in Peniche and this morning stocked up with fresh food at the local Jumbomarket including the delicious custard tarts. So after lunch we were ready to go heading off at 3PM local time. The wind is blowing from the West at around 15 knots so we are making a good start but expect the wind to go round to the North and ease soon. As we left we could see the big suspension bridge in Lisbon (Ponte 25 de Abril). The coast is littered with crab/ lobster posts - nice to eat but a pain to sail over so we are keeping a good look out. Our next leg should take around 5 days or more wind permitting. Paul and Peter are using this as a Yachtmaster Ocean qualifying sail and we must sail for at least 96 hours and for 600 miles.

Yesterday we tested the water maker and after a flush through it was switched onto salt water and shortly afterwards the crew were presented with a glass of very clean looking water that was consumed by one and all - no taste of any salt and all crew are alive and well so far today. The unit has therefore been deemed to be working and will be used to replenish the tanks on this passage. Next for a test run is the Aquair towed generator.

Thanks to everyone for their good luck messages and will report back soon.

Paul, Murray, Peter and Grateful
