Silver Slipper - Silver Slipper in Porto Santo

Well the Silver Slipper is moored up in Porto Santo.  Our departure from La Coruna was delayed as we waited for some spare parts to arrive from England but we still had a decent weather window for the crossing.  We arrived on Tuesday after 6 days and 10 hours from La Coruna to Porto Santo. First 5 days were magnificent. Bit lumpy on leaving La Coruna but once pass the shipping lanes we settled down to some great downwind sailing averaging some 140 miles a day.  Day 6 changed all that, wind went into SW and we spent hours tacking back and forth with constant wind shifts, we sometimes only made 2/3 miles towards our destination. Wind was anything from 2/3 and then 6/7. Great sailing but never getting very far, very quickly.
Throttle cable broke on passage so very limited use of engine so we just sat back and enjoyed the slow progress.  The sunrise and sunsets were magnificent; the Milky Way was the best we’ve ever seen and we were living the dream.
This was our first true ocean passage for Wendy and I and we loved it. We both felt a little disappointed when we neared Porto Santo as we both wanted the experience to continue but we know we have more to come in November.
Other that the throttle cable, the boat handled like a dream and we always felt safe and comfortable.  Bumble our dog onboard was also in her element and spent hours on dolphin watch
We are also now meeting more ARC yachts and the meeting and greeting of new friends is always special as we all have one aim in common. St Lucia!!
We’re off to Maderia later in the week and then Las Palmas for final preparations.
See you all soon.
Ian, Wendy & Bumble.
