Webster - Log 9: Oeiras to Sines 23rd June

Later start today to Sines scheduled 55nm. Very impressed with Oeiras but have to leave to head further South. Lovely day again, with wind N/NE so downwind again all the way. Poled out the jib again and went really well down to Cabo Espichel just under half way there and we sailed into a hole just off the cape and stayed at under 2 knots for half an hour or so. A bit surprised as supposed to blow harder around these points. The wind had been at some 15knots plus but soon returned from NW and increasing. We had already shaken out our reef earlier on but kept full rig up and were hitting 9 and 10 knots at times. Getting the pole down at the end was an issue again but managed it a little better this time by laying the boat across the wind again. Finished at 1522 first in class A again so we clearly had caught up and more after the wind hole. Interestingly we were third overall with Idifix first which was well deserved and Starblazer second, even more so.

John and Joyce organised a pontoon party for 1900 so along we went armed with wine, crisps and Twigletts! Those went down a treat. Clive from Valhalla bought along a lethal bottle of Cuban rum which also seemed to disappear at a rate. Kate and I returned to the boat for dinner but only managed a cup-a-soup and half a roll before crashing out - that's living!

After prize giving and a tour around the town the next day, went for a swim off the beach. Boiling hot in the sun but the water was quite the opposite - bl**dy freezing! Anyway, found a restaurant serving T bone steak that evening and ARC boats basically filled the place. Very early start tomorrow for the long hitch to Lagos so off to bed at 2200.
