Johanem - 9th May

Hi everyone

The Cap'n tells us we have only about 24 hour to go and thus this may be the last blog from the good ship Johanem while still en route to Bermuda.

Following last nights antics with the corned beef, Giles clearly needed to redeem himself. And how. We were bowling along at about 8 knots and just in the process of setting up the spinacker pole to goose wing, when the fishing line announced the presence of a fish. This required a combined effort to land. The (failed) ballet star (aka Simon) pulled in most of the line, but it required the skills of the key fisher on board (aka Giles) to land it. And what a fabulous fish--a large kingfish. There was some suggestion that this should be presented to the Governor of Bermuda (apparently known to Giles), but common sense (Boo) prevailed and Giles was able to give a masterclass--in how to gut a fish.
As I type this i am waiting for him to provide more evidence of his fisher skills--he is cooking dinner.
But that has not been all. Giles has shown himself to be a master of backgammon and has comprehensively beaten Skipper--who has now retired hurt to his bed.

I have never been on a cruise like this and my annual trips with Nick around the Solent have mostly been characterised by rain--but not this time. After a slow start on the engine we have had an excellent trip.
I have really enjoyed the company--so thanks to Ian, Giles and Crispin as well as Nick and Boo-- and have even enjoyed (most of) Nicks jokes. (Incidentally Giles is helping Nick here as well--compiling a list of what may be used in polite company. I think he has identified 3).

All the best from Simon and the rest of the crew
