Johanem - Johanem blog 1800 UTC 5 May

So here we are on Johanem , my first experience of sailing anything larger than a Windsurfer. We left Nanny Cay marina on Tortola yesterday in a group of 20 or so boats all heading for Bermuda and a bunk with the Governor in The Pink House.

We had an exciting first few minutes as we crossed a tight start line , insulted a Frenchman ,swore at a Chinaman and admired the lines of all the boats behind us. We are now at the back of the pack having taken it gently and towed two large sea monsters behind us for several miles which we failed to land.

It is not a race so we are relatively relaxed about our trailing position. The sea monsters , on the other hand are ecstatic as they both managed to elude our advances (so it's Tuna of the tinned variety for lunch)! We are currently motoring (under engine power) as we are keen to leave AA (not Alcoholics Annon but apparently a weather zone) and there is a distinct lack of wind.

There has been much instruction , a little imbibing and several very bad Australian jokes , despite these harsh conditions the crew are in very good humour and we will probably arrive in Bermuda in pole position ,in which case it will have been a race!

We would also like to let you know that our fleet tracker is not working for those of you following at home. We are safe and well. We will send a position to ARC rally control once daily who will then post it manually onto the Fleet viewer.
