Cleone - Leg 22A Day 1 - Back in the Groove
It's good to be at sea again. Our visit to St Helana was all too short. Most of us would be happy to have spent several more days there; the Skipper looked as if he wanted to take root there. But there was something special about sailing away from this little island in the afternoon sun. Looking back as it faded into the twilight, we wondered whether we would ever go back there (and I think that most of us have promised ourselves that it's a must), and if we did, whether there would be the same sense of magic about it. But we are here to sail across the oceans and around the world, we've got to walk the walk as well as talk the talk. After an hour, motoring in what little breeze there was was curtailed by having to switch the engine off for the 1800 hours radio schedule. Amidst the.

Voyageur - Log day 258 - Springing a leak!
12 March 2011The squalls finally died away by late evening and we settled down for a relaxing night's sailing. We put Voyageur on a more westerly course so that the wind was abaft the beam. As soon as it was light enough to see I got David up to pole out the genoa so we could head more downwind. The wind remained steady so we are able to keep sailing. Now we are in deep water, we have the left the local fishing boats who hover around the fifty metre contour, in our wake, and unlike the previous night when we found ourselves in the midst of a busy shipping route, we have not now seen a single vessel since yesterday afternoon. Our old problem with the bow thruster seal has returned. David last changed it during haul out in French Polynesia and with hindsight should have done it again in.

Persephone of London - SATURDAY 15TH SEPTEMBER - AN OVERNIGHT RUN
We had been the beneficiaries of various advice who had each advised us of efficient “jumping off points” on the Portuguese coast to make an efficient passage to Madeira. Many of the boats we had met along the journey thus far had elected to set off to the island from Figuera, or Cascais and some chose Sines, a few miles south of Cascais. However, we wanted to visit the Algarve coast too and set a course from Cascais direct to Lagos, on the south coast. Our predicted journey time was 24 hours so this was going to be the first night sail since we crossed Biscay. We upped anchor at around midday and motored off in calm conditions, hoping for the predictable sea breeze to kick in in the afternoon. Some minor engine uncertainty...the engine had developed a disliking for tick over or slow.

Cleone - In St Helena
It's a matter of life or death; Give us our Airport, Gordon. The Governor, Mr Gurr, was away when we arrived, back in London trying to convince the Foreign Office that the decision to Postpone the Decision (UK Government-speak for Cancel Until Further Notice) on the long-awaited Airport was not a good one, and needs to be reversed. A former Chief Secretary of the Falkland Islands Administration, apparently he comes from a business background. He should be better able than most diplomats to argue that the Airport is essential to revitalise St Helena, and that the capital cost of the Airport and the accompanying infrastructure fully outweighs the cost of a new Support Vessel to replace the ageing MV St Helena and the £15M a year currently needed in subsidies to keep the island.

Lady Ev.VI - lady Ev. VI daily log v. 12.3. Kapstadt - Brasilien

Matilda - In the Land Down Under
We arrived in Mackay on Friday 27th July and cleared customs and quarantine without having anything confiscated; in fact it was a very smooth and friendly process so we were pleasantly surprised. It was one of the easiest port entries we have experienced so far, and the officials even came aboard and completed the forms for us!Anne, Barry and Amethyst arrived on the Saturday and we prepared for the cruise through the Whitsudnays. We saw whales, some as close as 20 metres away, caught a lovely tuna for the BBQ and frolicked on Whitehaven, the most beautiful beach in the world. Our guests had a fabulous holiday and we even managed to squeeze in a visit to Magnetic Island on the last day. To top it all off, we ran aground in the entrance to Townsville marina, which is not something you.

Purrr-fect - Fish on
On the table that is.More about that in a second.Afew of the rough nights we started thinking what are we doing here.Today we know why.It was a great day. It started with a dolphin show at sunrise. We set the sails to wing and wing (know as goosewing by the Brits here) and had a beautiful down wind sail, with hardly touching the sail, for 15 hours.Clearand partly sunny. And we are rapidly closing on the Azores. As I write this we only have 120 miles to go and should be in late Tuesday evening. Then as Linda was starting to prep a spaghetti dinner, the reel starting singing. We quickly improved our fishing score to Fish 2 (lost lures); Purrrfect 1, as we landed a nice size Tuna.Jim cooked some immediately with his ownblend of spices, etc.It was great and we almost filled our small freezer.

Persephone of London -11TH - 14TH SEPTEMBER - NAZURE TO LISBON
We decided to leave Nazure on Tuesday afternoon and set sail over to the island of "Isla de Belinga" and take up an anchorage for the evening. It was a pleasant spot under the cliffs and lighthouse if not a little 'rolly'. The mist closed in and it wasn't long before you could only see the loom from the light of the lighthouse and not much more. The island is a local nature park so we spent the evening listening to the various cries of the many different sea birds. On Wednesday with set off for Cascais (a town east of Lisbon). This was probably the best days sailing so far in our trip! We had fantastic breeze, averaging 19 knots, great waves and beautiful sunshine all the way. We were able to fly the spinnaker for most.

Crazy Horse - March 12
Our position @ 1335 UTC 3 27.S 36 59.WWe were sailing along yesterday and suddenly we had one of our many squalls. After that squall we noticed that our batten from the mainsail was falling out. Being afraid that we would lose it or it would tear the sail , we took the mainsail down to fix it. With all the wind and squalls it was impossible to keep the sail still enough to work on it. The wind was fluky with gusts and then nothing. So we abandoned the idea of using the main and tried to sail only with the jib. Well, that didn't work very well and we really wanted to sail wing and wing. So we decided to motor until things calmed down to fix the sail. It got dark and Bill just decided to wait until morning to fix it and continue sailing along. So in the end we motored all night until we.

Talulah Ruby II - Talulah's Tales
St. Helena was a fantastic Island, with only 4000 inhabitants, the approach by sea made it seem barren, but once reaching Jamestown we were in a long forgotten lush English country town. Everyone waves or says good day, and as it was Wednesday when we arrived ashore, all the shops had half day closing (for those of us who remember such things!) along with a castle and church, a truly peaceful place. There is no airport and no land nearby, so very cut off; luckily for us a supply ship had just called so provisioning was possible, apart from fruit, I only found 4 overripe apples in the whole town. For the younger, fitter crew members there was Jacob's Ladder to climb; 700 vertical steps up a cliff face, whilst the senior sailors retired to the pub. We did however go for a tour round the.

Vsekakor bomo to videli. To mi ustreza, saj nimam posebnega veselja z prihodi v luko ponoci. Samsara - samsara won't be able to continue with the rally
August 7Unfortunately the boat requires some repairs and it's going to take several months to fix. We are going to miss all of the participants of the rally and the World ARC family so much!We aren't sure what's going to happen at this point but we may be cruising around here and joining the 2nd half of the next rally - we'll just have to wait and see where life takes us.It's been sad to watch each of the boats leave Mackay and know that we won't be meeting up with everyone at the next port. It's not goodbye - we'll be catching up sometime/somewhere in the future!Pauline.

Anastasia - Whitehaven Beach
20:17.5S 149:03.2E Today we took a short trip from Hamilton Island to Whitehaven Beach. The sand here is amazingly white and fine. Almost pure silicon dioxide. When you walk on it it squeaks. So, of course, this meant that Anastasia's crew spent the first half hour on the beach doing zombie impersonations, shuffling around to make the sand squeak. Bertie and Estella went for a swim in the 21 degree water. Not quite far enough north to tempt me or Andrea in for a dip.

Poco Loco - La gran aventura del Poco Loco

A Lady - Sailing around the World.
FRIDAY 11th MARCH 2011 We generally had a slow night, crawling up along the Brazilian coast, the wind ranged from 14 knots in the light patchesto 36 knots in the squalls, and ocillated by as much as 60 degrees. Again, we passed a lot of fishermen , all with their single bright white light on board, perhaps to attract the fish, but they can be seen for a long way offf. Some of these boats are really small and a long way off shore, perhaps 15miles or so. Brave men. We read the emails during the morning and did the blog, great to hear from Robbie Andrews again, along with Margaret How, Susan Mangan, Oyster, Arnaud, Richard, Larry and Vera in N.Z. Quasar V of Lleyn - log 14th January 2009
14th January 2009 POLISHING QUASAR V BEFORE HER ARRIVAL AT ST.HELENA This morning brought with it dreary tidings of grey cloudy skies and choppy seas. Poor Quasar was yawing and sliding through the waves in the most ungainly of fashions. We were running, with the wind directly behind us blowing about 15 - 18 knots, pulsing to 23 knots, with the occasional backing to the ESE. In the long grey silence of the morning, we received a call on the VHF: 'yacht to my starboard, yacht to my starboard, this is yacht to your port, yacht to your port.' It was a single-handed sailor called Ewourd who was participating in the Governor's Cup Challenge, a race from Simonstown to St.Helena. We were the first boat he had seen since leaving port back on 29th December. An excitable exchange of.

Voyageur - Log day 257 - A Squally Start
11 March 2011Our first day broke us in gently as we sailed close hauled in a gentle force three to four. Just as we finished supper quite a little storm broke. We had been watching as the skies grew leaden and overcast but the speed at which it arrived took us by surprise. From what we could hear on the VHF it had caught many of the rest of the fleet unawares. The wind went from 10knots to 36knots with driving rain. It lasted a full hour. Thank goodness we are able to reef this boat down in seconds. The rest of the night was punctuated with angry squalls but the strongest gusts now only reaching 26knots. The forecast had been for scattered showers and winds 6 to 16knots so clearly Aeolus and Zeus had other ideas. However it anything good was to come of it, it was that the rigging and the.

Anastasia - Hamilton Island
20:21.1S 148:56.4E Tonight we are on a mooring buoy off Hamilton Island. The marina was full because there are a lot of boats arriving for next week's race week. The buoys are in a channel with a strong tidal current (about three knots at full flood). The buoys are to one side of the channel but we were still swinging as the tide changed and the big buoy was getting trapped between the hulls. Our solution is to tie the buoy tightly between the hulls to prevent it from hitting Anastasia and waking us up when we swing in the middle of the night. One more advantage of a catamaran. We took the tender into the marina to have a look around and had a drink in a cafe overlooking the marina. It is a nice.

Approaching NW Spain the wind went forward forcing us to again use the motor into CAMARINAS at 1300hrs UT on Mon 10th Sept (exactly 4 Days and 550nm).Working the “Mother Watch” proved acceptable to the 4 crew who were not overly-tasked as the auto-helm performed impeccably. 38 29N 29 28W, 20:00, 28th May As they say, "It's Not Over Till The fat lady Sings" however, we're within 50 miles of Horta, almost in sight of land and certainly well within helicopter rescue range........ so we're feeling quite relaxed!!We had been beginning to think the the "Azores High" was actually the "Azores Hi" and was merely how the locals greeted each other. However, while it once again dawned cold and grey, about lunchtime it cleared up and we've had a good downwind day in the sun and 15 - 20 knots. Crossed fingers this carries all the way to the finish. We're in whale watching territory and also prime game fishing waters so maybe, after hundreds of miles of trawling we'll maybe catch something. Many of the other boats have been hauling them in daily but as usual,.

Our position @ 1432UTC 4 52.S 34 56.WYesterday we had the start of the last leg of this World Arc Rally,'10-'11. It was a fine start with light winds and a few boats seemed to go over the line quite closely. There was a little banter between OJ and CH but the captains settled down and gave each other a smile and a wave. Everyone had some good words to say in our departure over the radio to Paul and Suzanna for making our stay in Brazil so nice. We on Crazy Horse do appreciate all their work to make our stay a pleasant and exciting one. They even herded us into taxis when the buses got delayed in all the traffic of the carnaval. It had to be a challenge to keep us all safe and accounted for. But they did a grand job!So we have been having a wonderful sail this whole time since the start.

The anticipated passage time, could be anything between 12 and 15 days. The current weather prediction is for light winds, so a slow passage is anticipated but the silver lining, is that for the moment, we have very little chance of any severe weather conditions. All is well on board both with man and machine so it's time to settle down, catch up on our reading, computer work, and sail Kasuje as well as these conditions will allow.Back to our stopover in St Helena.Yet another island paradise, but not the.

We're working on it, and will report later on how far we havesucceeded in disillusioning him. The last few miles, as ever, seemed to take ages. In a way we missedout not making a landfall during daylight, but in the bright moon-light it wasimpressive to see the mountains looming closer and closer, and finally to beable to make out the swell crashing against the cliffs as we made our way aroundthe North of the Island and into the Bay. Ninfea - Arrival!
Arrival!Sunday 27 at 7.26 in the morning Ninfea arrived in the marina of Horta after 10 days, 15 hours and 27 minutes from our departure from Bermuda. A difficult crossing by many standard particularly at the beginning and the end of the journey. The first night was particularly difficult because the waves were coming from three different directions which made interesting (meaning difficult) the business of standing in any position in the boat. After that the wind settled on a 70 degrees tack which lasted several days, I believe the longest I have been on a single tack that was not downwind. After that we had a little bit of everything, motoring, downwind, close hauled, etc. which was reflecting the rapid passing of low pressure fronts. The last two days winds surged to an uncomfortable.

10 March 2011Yesterday was our last day in Brazil. David is such a fantastic planner. There is never a last minute panic. All our preparations for leaving just fall nicely into place. After the skippers briefing we shared a taxi to Carrefour with Irene and Dick and as usual bought far too much stuff. We have melon, passion fruit, apples, oranges, kiwi fruit, papaya, limes, bananas, grapes, tomatoes, broccoli, green beans, cauliflower, potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, aubergine, courgette, cabbage, cucumber, lettuce, spring onions. The greatest challenge to me will be making sure that none of this will be thrown overboard. I do so hate waste. We had a last lunch in the yacht club, a last swim in the pool and said goodbye to Sylvia and Hermann from Destiny who are returning to Germany..

Poco Loco - Lanzarote, Puerto Calero - Rubicon, ever so slowly getting there... :-)

Cleone - CLEONE Leg 22 Day 12 - Nearer to Freedom
Yesterday Cleone forces capture and killed the Big Yin in a pre-planned operation. It was a combined operation, of course. Jenni provided the Intelligence: "The fridge is empty; there's no supper unless you catch him". The Skipper sorted the logistics (right kit, right place, right time - Rod, Reel, Lure, Gaff, Hammer, Bucket, Rope, Knife, Chopping Board - you know the score), Shayne deployed an irresistible lure and wielded a skilful gaff and Graham, of course, spearheaded the assault. We were all looking reflective as the prospect of another protein-less meal looked more and more certain, when the now-familiar whine of the reel unexpectedly interrupted us. We had been fishing all day, with no result. The Skipper was steering. Shayne, in the fore-peak, woke from a deep sleep,.

Anastasia - Platypuses and Kookaburras
Today we went on a tour of the area around Mackay. There was a lot of interesting stuff about the sugar cane farming (one of the primary exports of the region) but obviously it was the unique Australian scenery and wildlife that was most fascinating to us. The platypus park was at the top of a maintain ridge where you could look back right to the coast. A1B Rather than risk allowing people to burn stuff in the national parks, the authorities provide these gas operated barbies. A1C The platypuses showed up on cue. A1D We also visited a beautiful waterfall. A1E And when we returned to the coach it was surrounded by Kookaburras that were sitting in the old gum trees. They were much bigger than we expected, more like fluffy chickens than members of the kingfisher.

A Lady - Sailing around the World
WEDNESDAY 9th MARCH 2011 09.00hrs We had a skippers briefing ashore, this outlined the next leg to Granada which starts at 9pm tomorrow morning, plus who would the radio control each day and lots more besides. The " First Mate" did some Skyping, she has really taken control of this facility. This was followed by some swimming and relaxing around the pool. plus lots of chat. Later, we , S & A got the bus down town to Recife Shopping Mall to escape the heat and post the bundle of cards that have been building up over the last week or so. We had a pizza lunch in this posh Italian Restaurant before returning to the Marina , paying all the charges collecting the passports and clearance papers and motoring out to the boat. We are all.

Persephone of London - 9th September
It had been very foggy the last couple of mornings but today looked like an ideal day to head further south. We had a great breeze (more than originally expected) with few patches of sea mist but nothing too disturbing. It was great not having to put on the 'old iron donkey' and get a full days sailing under our belts again. We were now heading to the next destination of Nazare which we estimated would take us about 6 hours. The Nazare marina is run by an elderly English gentleman (ex Naval Officer) who called us up on the VHF as we approached the harbour walls. He was extremely efficient and gave us STRICT instructions on how we should moor up in the allocated slot (as only an ex Naval Officer can!) He and his wife (who he charmingly referred to as 'No 1) were there at the.

Quasar V of Lleyn - Quasar V's log 13.1.09
Tuesday 13th January 2009 MUSCLING IN Winds have increased and the waters are unsettled and choppy. We've managed to keep Viva to our stern and have decided to keep up the Twistle rig given the strengthening winds. Lindsey is still smarting over Malcolm's insult last night and is even more concerned about the issue in the cold light of day. Indeed, it has appeared that our crew numbers have increased by 8, overnight; seven flying fish were found on the deck and one in the galley, no doubt volunteering to be the new deckhands and galley slave. Will the flying fish prove to be stronger and more nimble with the spinnaker than Lindsey? Certainly, the one in the galley will cook foods more to Malcolm's liking, for they certainly won't cook the tuna! Let me digress briefly; several nights.

Crazy Horse - March 10
Today was a busy day getting the boat ready for the next and last leg of this rally. A group of us girls went to the mall today to help Annie pick out her wedding dress. She was successful and says she feels like a princess in her wedding dress. There are pictures in the Jeannius blog of the dresses that were not chosen if anyone cares to view them. Of course the chosen one will not be available for viewing until the wedding. I will have to make sure my dress, as a bridesmaid will be acceptable to the bride. We will have to wait for Grenada for selection of the bridesmaid dresses. The wedding will be held on the island of Mayreau in the Grenadines. It was an exciting day and we topped it all off with lunch at a local restaurant. After a day at the local mall I think we girls are ready.

Cleone - CLEONE Leg 22 Day 11 - The Fish Strike Back
Flying Fish; the SAS of the undersea world. The Skipper knew it was only a matter of time. The carnage we had wrought amongst the Mahi Mahi population (and we had another this morning - we don't take prisoners on Cleone) was bound to cause a back-lash, and even in the dog-eat-dog, chaotic world of Neptunes Kingdom. The Administration is corrupt; assassination squads roam freely and beneath the surface of the sea there is a veritable cauldron of different factions, all preying on each other and all of them, even the mightly whales, likely to become prey themselves of the greatest of all predators; man. But occasionally, these disparate groups manage, either individually or collectively, to strike back. And I am afraid last night it was our turn. Naturally, tiny little desert outposts.
