Koala - Dec 16th: Are we nearly there yet?

Well, yes, thank you very much for asking... All being well, we are expecting to get to Rodney Bay early on Wednesday morning. Which is great news. This last few days have been pretty tough. Mainly because of squalls. It is very difficult in squally conditions to set the right amount of sail. Particularly with the main sail, as to take in a reef involves rounding up into the wind. This is not pleasant in 13ft swells and 8 ft waves that we have at the moment and usually involves a soaking. If you do not reef and get caught out by a squall, that is also not good. I had an interesting 20 minutes a couple of nights ago where I was standing behind the wheel heading straight down wind with a 3 reefed main up in 40+ knots of breeze and in front of the boat, I could see nothing apart from. read more...

Moondancer - Monday 16th December 15.03 (GMT - 4)

So here we areWe can almost smell the CaribbeanOnly 140 miles to go and even we had to motor we would have enough fuel.I'm sure mother nature will give us one last surprise but feeling optimistic slowly chugging towards the finish with our 1 remaining sail at a steady 7-8 knots.So to summerise - We have lost 2 sails including the main,and the lazy jacks. We have something on our prop so we have to keep the gear lever in reverse to stop it from engaging while its off. We lost all our electronics halfway across and our auto pilot but managed to fix them. 5 sail cars and 1 slug, oh and the hydro generator has just come free but is retrieved but not in use.The most important thing is we are all well and not injured and nearly there.Compared to some other boats we are very lucky.Our hearts go. read more...

Merlyn III - We have arrived

The completion of our voyage arouses a mixture of emotions. Relief that wehave completed it safely; the prospect of reuniting with wives; the pleasure ofanticipation of a hot bath; the prospect of dry land. On the other hand theremust be some regret that our micro world on the boat will be ending.   Our passage time is 18 days 18 hour and 40 minutes. However, as regularvisitors to the Blog will know, this was the ARC of the becalmed and we havearound 140 engine ours to our debit. We are not overly concerned with this as ifwe had not motored we would undoubtedly have arrived several days later, to theconsternation of our spouses.   The lack of wind was hardly ideal but the variety of wind meant we triedmost combinations of sailing rig/strategies which has hopefully improved. read more...

Second Wind - Message from Chris Diggins

If I hear one more Popeye joke the crew concerned will be forced to eat a raw onion just before he greets his wife on the pontoon on Wed. We have plenty of them. Onions, I mean. It started with that daily imperative, fresh bread. With the dough resting and tidy-up underway the olive oil was secured in a bin on non-slip matting. Cue rock and roll, our downwind curse, and as the motion of the boat made us feel like kittens in a tumble dryer cue olive oil bottle sumersaulting over both sinks and landing at just the right angle to spurt its contents over the saloon floor. Cue bread dough and tin cartwheeling across the galley to of course land upside down on the floor. Now, when kitchen roll was provisioned there was much criticism of the amount. Blue Dolphin - Day 22 -

Another day (and night) of tossing and rolling.   The ship’s bell has continued to clang as wave after wave has knocked the boat over, driving the crew demented - until Carol found a good use for the jumper Kathy brought for the teddy!!   (Insert photo) As Mike was helming the crew pointed out the squall that was fast approaching  -“No it won’t be bad and we definitely won’t need to reef” he said.  Guess what!   The crew refrained from saying “told you so”.  Yet again, Kathy has wet knickers. The mood has lightened as the crew are confident there is only 2 more nights to endure!!!  Sally was finally woken prematurely from a sleep when a huge wave found its way through the crack in her cabin hatch smack into her face.  The. read more...

Edelweiss - Over and Out

Dear faithful readers -We write our last ARC blog post from our slip in the Rodney Bay Marina.We arrived about 24 hours ago, powering into the marina in the dark with 30 knots of headwind when a strong rain front descended upon us.No trouble for the sturdy crew of Edelweiss.Mason held his post on the bow with the searchlight, Teri and Lyell prepared the boat for landing, and Stuart kept Edelweiss moving along.10 minutes later, we were tied up, drinking a rum punch provided upon arrival by the diligent ARC team.We are now in the process of cleaning up the boat from our adventure, and want to offer special appreciation to all the kind notes, support and encouragement we received from all of you.That support helped us through the challenging moments so that we could accomplish what we set. read more...

Duplicat - Monday 16 December

No satcoms yesterday, apparently on Saturday night we crossed the boundary between systems and didn't realise we had to reset ours to the American one - but all working fine again.Weather appalling, since Thursday we have had between 22 and 32 knots of wind with some heavy squalls - highest wind speed 42 knots, fastest boat speed 18 knots and all with a little piece of jib up. Boat tracks well down the waves and we feel safe if not a bit battered and tired - just moving around is hard and the catering is a lot less fancy now than earlier in the trip!Biggest swell -estimated at 6m and many near that size yesterday.But 349 to go!!!!!. read more...

Keoma - Keoma has made it!

Well, after our tour of the West African coast, a brief passing right through the middle of the only navigational obstacle in the whole ocean we eventually found the trade winds for the final week to blast into St Lucia. Everybody fit and well fed, down to last teabags and ran out of gas on last day so good job we in!Fantastic reception here by other competitors, pulled of a cunning overtaking manoeuvre against an Irish boat on the run into the finish, lets face it, we were not racing! Abraxas - 16/12/13 less than 24hours to go

ETA remains the same asyesterday, early hours of Tuesday am.  We are currently cruising at 7knotsover the ground in approx 25knots of wind having just passed through a squallproducing winds of ore than 30knots.  Gary and Karen are doing the washingup whilst Paul and Drew are recovering from their respective eveningwatches.  Igor as always is busy reading a typing up his own personal account of the voyage –I do not know how he manages in the bow cabin with all that bouncingaround.  As I type, we are 51nm NE of Barbados and 116nm off St StLucia.  The Raymarine auto pilot, who has now become known as the seventhmember of the crew, Ray is at the helm whilst the squall pass.  He is asteady hand and never looses concentration like we all do. read more...

Jade - Day 23 - the neighbours popped round

When you're out in the middle of the ocean you don't get many people popping round. So imagine our surprise yesterday, when our friends on the boat Millport II came into vision. Shelduck - Mon 16 Dec Cruising Mode

Mon 16 Dec  14:35.447 N 58:24.080 W  Distance travelled in24h  147 miles   We are definitely in cruising mode. Yesterday afternoon we were called upon the VHF by Patrick Henri of Switzerland in the multihull Allure to ask if wewere OK because he thought we were going so slowly as he was overtaking us.Brendan, on watch at the time, immediately set more sail! Anne said to tell him that the Skipper was opening a bottle of vintagechampagne and had slowed down in order not to spill any.   Anne is not upset by her damp clothes. She is used to it and enjoyingherself too much to notice. Aspen - Log 23 Monday 16 Dec; NASA

It seems that the United States space program, NASA, is looking for volunteers, preferably a couple, to make the long and arduous passage to Mars.They are looking for those people who have spent extensive time alone together, faced numerous mechanical, electrical and logistical problems and who like to travel.Hmmmm, I think they just need to sign up some long distance sailors for the job!We spend long periods of time alone at sea, are required to fix anything and everything onboard our sailboats to ensure a safe passage and we constantly live as one with everything nature sends us.The only problem I see is that once the sailors get to Mars will they be able to get back to Earth?NASA admits that might be a slight glitch in the system but they may be able to get them back.The word MAYBE is. read more...

Duplicat - Sunday 14th 14.21 51.50

This is not really sailing, not able to fly anything bigger than a pocket handkerchief jib, we have forgotten what our spinnaker looks like - not been out of the hatch for days. This leg from Mindelo has been either calm and you need to motor or 30 knots of wind with a new record gust of 42 this morning. We had a day when we could fly our code zero earlier this week but that has been taken down and stowed away.Life on board has deteriorated as sleep is now hard due to the sea conditions and you expend so much energy just moving around or trying to do stuff.On the plus side we have a new speed record of 18 knots made this morning surfing down a huge sea and the distance to go has gone down to 525 with a time of arrival of just over 80 hours but of course that may well change.. read more...

Sweet Pearl - 23. Tag - Bergfest

Gestern haben wir die Marke der 1000 verbleibenden Seemeilen um 15:14 Lokalzeit geknackt! Da wir die Feste feieren, wie sie kommen, wurde zusammen mit dem Gott der Meere Erasmus auf ein Glas Sekt angestossen. Aber damit nicht genug, beim Abendessen gabs dann zur Feier des Tages auch noch ein Dessert: Karamelflan. Die lassen es sich gut gehen. Alle sind wohl auf, und dies trotz der im halbstündigen Takt immer wiederkehrende Querwelle, die unsere Sweet Pearl jedes Mal hin und her schwanken lässt, und einen ganz normalen Schlaf erschwert. Wenn ich diese Querwelle in die Finger kriege...dann zeig ich ihr wo der Bartli de Moscht holt;-).Wind, Welle und Wetter sollen in den nächsten Tagen so bleiben, so dass wir unsere Speedtour fortsetzen können. Webster - Log 24: So near yet so far

Sunday 15th December:Position 14 37'N 57 07W.After a very squally and pitch black night Ken made ham and cheese omelets for breky. He doing everything he can not to lose this chief cook and bottle washer role he has assumed......he's not like this at home, his wife tells me! The boat rolling between 45 degrees to port and then to starboard gives some indication of how difficult this is, and with the boat surfing at 13+ knots. As we close St Lucia, our ETA seems to dominate conversation, with Jerry on his Garmin giving up to the second predictions, which are all based on assumptions as to speed and velocity made good given we cannot achieve the dead down wind angle necessary to sail direct. Hera - Hera über die Ziellinie

Das wars!!Um 12.   Uhr Ortszeit (UTC-4h) nach fast auf die Minute 22 Tagen gingdie “Hera” über die Ziellinie in Rodney Bay. Die letzten24 Stunden waren ein Höllenritt auf 4-5 m Wellen bei Windstärken von 7-8 bft.Damit konnten wir im dritten Reff ein Rekordetmal von 210 sm aufstellen. 12.35 ginges über die Ziellinie. Die Wende haben wir erst 10m vor dem Zielschiff gefahren.In den Augen der Zielrichterin  war das blanken Entsetzen zu lesen.Wahrscheinich dachte sie, dass wir für erlittene  Entbehrungen dasZielschiff versenken wollten. Sephina of Beaumaris - Day 22 - Meet the Sparkes'

Day 22 - Meet the Sparkes' Now if I said to a lot of people that they had to go and spend 3 weeks isolated on a 40 foot yacht in the middle of the Atlantic with their soon to be in-laws... well we can all imagine their reaction. So this is my account of such a trip....... Now to start with, a little back story. Nothing about my relationship with my Fiancée Steph or the Sparkes Clan has been in what I would call real time. For example, Steph and I had barley been together when we got our first job together and we soon flew out to run a yacht flotilla. So from day one we were in each others pockets. But it worked. And the same really applies to my in-laws to be. I have, between winter and summer seasons working with Steph, managed to go up to the Sparkes family home on three occasions.. read more...

Aditi - Day 20: 9 out of 10

As dawn broke after a sleepless drumming with highest wind at 46.7kn we stared at a strange phenomena; everywhere you looked to sea seemed to be uphill! It seemed we were sailing up a steep incline which messed with the head.With the heat after sunrise the squalls dissipated. By 0900 the seas were huge but beautiful, organised and perfect longwaves of azure with turquoise crests shining in the sun. They gave a smooth ride in 30kn E so we set about with our new arts & crafts project, storm sail or staysail? Not much in it but the staysail is cut lower and may have more power; it was hoiked out of the forward shower, manhandled through the companionway and clipped to lifelines for a kind of drag down the deck. Miciadue - Noch am dritten Advent die Ziellinie durchlaufen

Wir haben es heute noch geschafft!!! Wir haben die Ziellinie in der Rodney Bay um 22.10 Uhr durchlaufen und haben um 22.30 Uhr festgemacht. Wir sind glücklich, zufrieden und dankbar, dass wir die Überfahrt gesund und unbeschadet geschafft haben. Wir haben in den letzten drei Wochen viel erlebt und haben sehr viel Spaß gehabt. Die Zeit ist wie im Fluge vorbeigegeangen. Wir danken allen Daheimgebliebenen, die uns mit dem Finger auf dem Monitor gefolgt sind, an uns gedacht haben und uns uns mit (Wetter)Infomationen versorgt haben. Die Miciadue, hat uns ohne große Probleme durch Wind und Welle, über das Wasser gebracht und hat uns keinen Augenblick im Stich gelassen. Dank natürlich auch an unseren Skipper Vincent! Annabella - Annabella - Final blog

Position: Berth E 17, Rodney Bay Marina, St LuciaOur arrival in Rodney Bay was a bit dramatic, because it was blowing 25 knots with big rolling waves as we approached the island. We thought that once we got around the top we would be in the lea of the land giving calmer water for gybing. How wrong can you be? We managed to get rid of the pole, and all we had to do was let the port twin over on to the starboard twin and sort the sheets. We could then scoot over the line. Port twin was let go too early and went in front of the forestay with gusts of 30 knots. Struggled to get the sheet around the forestay, but after a bit of flapping managed it and we were in. Kaoma, who we met in Las Palmas was coming in behind us and managed to squeeze ahead of us (higher division so not an issue).. read more...

Selivra - ARC Tag 21

ARC Tag 21, Sonntag2013-12-15, 19.00Hola amigos!Mehr als 4 Tage schon reiten wir bei Tag und Nacht über den Atlantik. DieWellen erreichten schon mal die 4-5 Meter und wir werden so richtig durchund durch geschüttelt (bin schon gespannt, wie es sich anfühlt wiederfesten Boden unter den Füssen zu haben). Die Squalls kommen und gehen undheute hatten Frank und ich einen Spitzenwert von 9 Windstärken bei über 9Knoten Fahrt und einer netten Böe von 56 kts. Wir wurden dafür mit einererfrischenden sonntäglichen Süßwasserdusche belohnt.Im nächsten Leben möchte ich auf jeden Fall 10 cm größer sein, dann rutscheich hoffentlich nicht mehr vom Ruderstand (passiert letzte Nacht um 3.00).Aber man/frau ist ja gut gesichert und so ist man auch schnell wieder aufden Beinen.Mal fliegt ein Teller, hin und. read more...

Windleblo - Day Twenty One

Seventy-five miles to go.Tonight's dinner, a mélange of sweet potato, raw peanuts, and tofu in a thick garlic, ginger, curry sauce, was assembled by John Hoopes, now called Hans by his Austrian shipmate. Around the cockpit table, you could sense the anticipation of landfall. Someone posed a simple question, "What's the first thing you are going to do once we hit land?" The answers were equally simple."Give my wife a hug.""Go for a cold beer.""Take a long walk."And, jokingly, "Polish the boat."Not spoken, but hidden just beneath the answers were the emotions held by each crewman. Milanto - Final Blog Entry

After a memorable moonlit downwind sail for the final 20 miles to St Lucia , we first sighted the lights of Martinique and shortly afterwards,St Lucia. It was an immensely satisfying and thrilling feeling after 18 days at sea.Final preparations were made for the upwind charge to the finish line once we had rounded Pigeon Island and importantly, the Champagne was ready and waiting on ice!The ARC photographer came out to greet us as we approached the finish line and we crossed at 1:06am local time on on Thursday 12th Dec to hoots of delight from all onboard.A welcoming rum punch awaited us dockside at Rodney Bay - as did the news that Team Milanto had achieved 3rd place in Racing B division, 6th in all Racing Divisions and 15th on real time out. read more...

Shelduck - Sun 15 Dec Skipper's Fall

Sun 15 Dec 14:45.385N 55:54.185W Distance traveled in 24h 155 miles   We are out 3 weeks today and in that time have traveled 2735 miles at anaverage speed of 5.43 knots. Cloudless day for a change.This is our 3rd or 4th day of continuous rollercoaster combined with skidpan rally swerving, bucketing and rolling. At about midday yesterday (Saturday) the Skipper was moving to the charttable to download a weather forecast when he was caught off balance in a broachand was thrown across the boat and landed on a spot just to the left of hisspine on the bar protecting the cooker.  Gabby, our health, safety andwelfare officer, decided he should not be moved from the floor for an hour.Having made her assessments she decided he may, at worst, have cracked a rib ashis symptoms and pain. read more...

Shelduck - Sat 14 Dec The Weather

Sat 14 Dec 14:53.568N 53:15.762W Distance travelled in 24h 151 miles   The wind has been blowing 20-25 knots since Wednesday with waves 5-6 metreshigh. Many days have been overcast.  The squalls are easy enough to see coming, dark shapes in the sky, and whenthey hit the wind usually increases to 30 knots and backs 30 degrees. A fewtimes it has backed 50 degrees and increased to reaching gale force. During oneof these Shelduck lay down and water came green over the cockpit coaming,engulfing the skipper up to his armpits.   The squall clouds come in at about 30-45 degrees from the direction of thewind, so when we look out behind us, anything nasty looking directly behind uswill pass to our port side and not cause too much trouble. We suspect it isthe salt water inlet is leaking and plan to have it attended to in Martinique,hopefully at a Dufour agent.   The engine start button is not its usual self but continues to start ifpressed down firmly. Shelduck - Thu 12 Dec The Rig

Thu 12 Dec 14:57.511N 48:00.025W Distance travelled in 24h 147 miles.   Brendan is well experienced now in moving the two genoas from reaching torunning. To go from reaching to running the jib sheet and the lazy/back up jibsheet have both to be moved out of the amidships deck tracks to outside thestantions and the jib sheets put through the blocks at the ends of the twinspinnaker booms. This involves clambering about very carefully on the plungingforedeck, safety line clipped to the jackstays.   We learned of the need for these blocks at one of the ARC seminars in GrandCanaria. On the passage down from Lagos to Lanzarote we had badly damaged thejib sheets by chafe as they ran directly through the pole ends. Thankfully wehave no sign of chafe up to now with this. read more...

Adina - Day 21 Singing our way to St.Lucia

Day 21 and more Atlantic mountains and more wind. Minds are definitely swinging towards thoughts of the finish line - one moment thinking of the joy of making it, next moment the relief of making it!And more 40 knot squalls - one person tends to stay upstairs and steers the boat through high winds and lashing rain while the rest stay dry down below. We have had two reefs in the genoa and two in the main sail. Again for our non-sailing friends, this is just a measure of how much of the good old white handkerchief you leave out.Three weeks on and we started having no idea that we would be plagued by light winds to start and clobbered by heavy winds to finish. We live on our little Adina island oblivious to all. Indeed we had no idea of the sad passing of Nelson Mandela until it was posted. read more...

Jambo - new record

Big seas and winds today but Carol driving the boat and hit 11.1 knots - having the spinnaker up in 35 knotsdid seem excessive ! Actually she did this surfing down a rather large wave. I was asleep at the time to be woken by Nick and Tom sounding like screaming banshees as Jambo ( hull design speed 7 knots ) hit a new record.... go girl!. read more...

Miciadue - Nun schmelzen die letzten Seemeilen dahin

Die letzten 42 sm liegen vor uns. Die Zeit verläuft so schnell. Heute hatten wir - wie gestern - 6 bft und relativ unruhige See. Wir bereiten uns nun langsam auf die Ankunft vor. Flaggen setzen, Startnummer wieder am Seezaun montieren, ARC-Flagge setzen, notwendige Unterlagen ausfüllen usw.. Wir hoffen noch heute anzukommen. Wir haben es jetzt aktuell 15.30 Uhr (= UTC minus 4 Stunden). Je nach Wind und ggf. noch notwendigen Manöver könnte das klappen. Und wir werden noch den Kühlschrank wieder einschalten, um den (echten) Champagner zu kühlen. Es gibt eine Flasche für die Miciadue und eine Flasche für die Crew. Blue Dolphin - Day 21 - Oh what a night!

The night was terrible.  The winds continued to build and were gusting up to 35kns.  Sleeping was impossible (except for Sally who seems to be able to sleep through anything).  The crew wondered why they ever thought this would be a good idea!  The boat was tossed all over the place.  It was like being in a washing machine – on spin!!  Looking out at the seas was scary as the waves were huge – at least double decker bus size.  The only upside was the speed – the fastest time recorded was 12.1 Kts but that was only from surfing down a big wave. Doing anything was a huge task and opening cupboards was positively dangerous.  How did a jar of olives manage to hurl itself out of the cupboard, losing its lid on the way, scattering olives and all. read more...
