World ARC Fleet - Mid Indian Ocean

06 October 2015

Leaving the Cocos (Keeling) Islands described by Eric on yacht ‘Luna Quest’ as being “pristinely clean where coral lives in an unpolluted environment”, the fleet have made good progress on their 2350 nautical mile passage towards Mauritius.

As in 2014, the 14 yachts participating in the rally this year are experiencing good winds, setting them up for another quick crossing. Despite the favourable winds, the reputation of the Indian Ocean with its confused sea state is keeping crews entertained whilst making good mileage each day.

“Exody is romping over the Indian Ocean at well over seven knots on a reach with double reefed main and single reefed genny. The sea and long deep swell is impressive - sparkling white waves, sometimes translucent aquamarine, over deep blue.” – Peter, Exody

The first arrivals to Port Louis, Mauritius are expected this Friday where they will be greeted by the rally control team and experience their first glimpse of Mauritian hospitality. A welcome of fresh fruit and rum awaits them on the dock after completing one of the more challenging ocean crossings of their circumnavigation.

“The trade winds are holding steady enabling us to make good progress. We are now over half way and if we can keep up the good progress, we could be making landfall early next week.” – Luna Quest
