Motoring through the Doldrums

11 February 2014

Following the colourful and breezy start of leg 2 (Las Perlas to Galpagos), crews have been experiencing the lack of wind that’s generally associated with equator, otherwise known as the doldrums.

Although the doldrums have resulted in the use of engines onboard, especially for those choosing a direct route, the Galapagos becomes ever closer and the varied sea life which the Pacific has to offer is becoming evident.

“We saw another whale near the boat at 0630 this morning, which was great accompaniment for another spectacular sunrise” – Nexus

“The blue marline was 7-8 feet long, including its bill; and weight… I have no idea. 100 plus pounds? Finally, the leader line broke and the fish left” – American Spirit

As yachts motor closer to the island of San Cristobal, the first arrivals are expected this evening where, in a typical Galapagos custom, crews will be welcomed by seals attempting to board their yachts whilst at anchor in Puerto Baquerizo. Crews need to be thinking about there seal defences in advance.

On arrival, a fun programme of activities awaits the crews including island tours and drift snorkels at Kicker Rock to view the diverse wildlife and environment that the Galapagos Islands offers.
