Makena - Niue

We are less than 2 days from Niue now. As we were powering along at 10kts this lunchtime both fishing lines buzzed so loudly that they scared Kai. Kai and I ran to the flybridge to get us upwind, furl the genoa and then slow the boat down as much as possible with some help from the starboard engine (Watt & Sea is out behind the portside one). Victor and Luc quickly each brought in a rather large tuna. Victor had just finished making us sushi for lunch with the tuna we caught two days ago! At least it is very tasty and we have plenty of sushi making supplies, including fresh ginger.

We went through quite a prolonged storm since the last blog. We stayed in a pack with Juno and A Plus 2 and checked in on each other hourly. Luc saw 56 true wind on the monitors on two occasions (a double front). A cargo ship passed very close to us all also but the captain (of Cap Avatele) was very nice and he faced straight into the waves to ease any worries caused by our limited maneuverability in such strong conditions. We were sailing with just our bright orange storm jib for most of the time. Victor and I got pretty soaked putting it up but we had practiced in calm weather before and it was just fun. There was so much rain coming into the flybridge area that the drains weren’t able to keep up so we had nice little one inch or so waves flowing around. Kai wasn’t allowed out in the weather too much but he squealed with delight to be able to play in the rain for a bit. We have a soccer ball that has now managed to be played with and yet still stay on the boat for over nineteen thousand miles (since La Rochelle almost one year ago)!  Anyway, I highly recommend reading yachtjuno.com to get their report of this storm and info about everywhere else we have been! Thanks also to Juno for the extra encouragement for the whole fleet to be well prepared for that low front.

Just in case anyone is wondering, we are skipping the scheduled stop at Suwarrow and heading direct for Niue. The winds just did not take us there and we chose to spend some time in Bora Bora at anchorage when other boats headed there under engine. Perhaps next time around!
