Free Spirit - Log Day 1: 9 May 2015

Log Day 1: 9 May 2015

News of the Conservative victory and the meltdown of the other parties, SNP excepted, has reached us. However, here in the BVIs, we have other preoccupations. Today is the day we cast off finally from Nanny Cay and head for the open sea of the Atlantic Ocean. First stop Bermuda in about 5 days' time. It has taken much hard work to get 'Free Spirit' and her crew prepared for the potential rigours ahead. All sorts of eventualities, good and bad, have been thought through and plans made accordingly. But we know that unanticipated happenings may be encountered to test our resources and ingenuity during the next few weeks and it is this element of uncertainty, greeted with a mixture of excitement and anxiety in varying proportions, that binds us. We are six; Peter, Carole, Richard, Louis, Ian and Michael.

The farewell dinner - a West Indian buffet- was great fun. The last couple of bottles of wine, courtesy of Ian, were perhaps not strictly necessary but, given that 'Free Spirit' will be alcohol free until she is safely berthed once more in Bermuda, they were consumed with little evidence of restraint; to be followed in some cases by yet more intoxicating liquor. Michael, who is not without influence in these parts, took charge to ensure that the 'Free Spirit' crew were the first to be served with food thereby not only keeping hunger at bay but also establishing a principle of precedence which we have determined to maintain. Thankfully, all of this took place two days ago and this morning we are sober and clear headed (see photo). The weather seems set fair for a following wind for the few days at least and we are raring to go. Our start time is 12 noon. Do track our progress and follow our logs on this website.
