Luna Quest - Thursday, 15th January

Noon Position: 12.42N 73.11W

Daily run: 141 miles

When Henri Charrierè (known as Papillon) managed to escape from French Guyana’s inhuman prison camp in the 1930s, he fell upon a litoral tribe in Guajira in Colombia that lived a life far removed from civilisation. The tribe nursed his terribly scarred and sunburnt body and adopted him as one of their own. He lived with them for well over a year fathering two children by the chief’s two daughters.

We passed the headland of Guajira yesterday, where the winds had been forecast to be accelerating along the coast, but we found the opposite and were lulled into a false sense of security overnight when a changed wind direction headed us for the coast. We were not able to maintain our course for Santa Marta without much banging and crashing of the sails and gear in a confused sea, so we headed out to sea to find a steady and easy layline of sail for Santa Marta. Half the fleet are already there or about to make landfall. We are bringing up the rear and shall probably make landfall tomorrow.
