Rhumb - Log Day 2

Quite a calm overnight sail greeted by sunrise at around 7.30. These calmer and quieter conditions raised the skippers concerns over a noisy autohelm drive unit. Opinions were divided over the severity and sound functioning of this at first, but it was decided to err to the side of caution and turn back to have the issue looked at. The main concern was the potential failure of the unit, meaning that we would then need to manually helm the boat for possibly a significant part of the passage which would have been extremely difficult.

San Miguel marina on Tenerife was chosen as the closest and best option for effecting a repair, and so we turned and headed towards this at around mid-morning. Unfortunately, the element of the passage became rather tedious against the wind, and it was at this time that David, our skipper, and Len came to the conclusion that they were not in such good physical shape as they thought, and both therefore made the very difficult decision to call it a day. Clearly a significant disappointment all round.
