Alchemy - The Tropics

For the last day, we have been sailing further and further south, some 200 miles. Today we can feel the sun, bright in the blue sky. Layers come off and we are changing from our matching red Gill jackets to shorts and t shirts.

As we are now firmly in the middle of our trip, we are some 500 miles from our start, the Bahamas or the BVI. I think that put's us firmly in the Bermuda triangle. At this point, the closest land is our destination, some 600 miles.

Alchemy feels sure and confident underneath us. She likes going to  weather, and is happy driving through waves at 6-7 knots into a fr'ward wind. Despite starting hours behind the Caribbean 1500 fleet, we have already overtaken several and watched them slip behind us on our AIS. Out in the ocean, you can only really see about 10 miles because of the horizon. In such an enormous place, its strange to pass with a couple of miles of other sailboats. Listening to VHF traffic, we hear from both the Carib fleet and the Salty Dawgs.

Sometimes we hear other traffic. Yesterday we hear from the navy, "This  is Warship 71 hailing sailing vessel off our port side. Please keep 3 miles clear as we are making continuous starboard turns." We guess they are doing some kind of exercise, but are tempted to hail them and say "Warship 71, you seem to be going in circles, do you need assistance?"
