Nexus - Hiva Oa - Baie Atuona

The Marquesas are easily one of the most beautiful island groups in the South Pacific. We spent several nights in Atuona on arrival in Hiva Oa, Marquesas, as the small bay slowly jammed full with 21 of our boats, I'm not sure the locals know what hit them as the first thing to fall over was the island's internet service. Atuona is a delightful small village with a hardware store, couple of small grocery stores, and several shops. We spent several evenings at Alex's pension, with about 20 other World ARC crew members enjoying their home style cooking, playing pool and fusball, swimming in their pool, and ...oh yea...drinking. It was great to socialize with the World ARC group again and catch up with everyone. Alex is a former French Foreign Legion officer, great guy and very welcoming, giving us rides up the steep hill to his home and back while his family cooked our meals and tended bar. We took and island tour with Mary Jo's taxi one day and followed a billy goat trail across the entire island. The views are stunning, and scary, the island is a giant botanical garden with lush forests of pine, mango, and many other trees and flowers. We visited the remote large Tiki site, where the former chief and queen lived, married and sacrificed people. We also visited the Paul Gauguin museum and studio where the painter lived, as well as Jaques Brel, a famous musician who lived on the island and provided the only air service with his Beechcraft Bonanza which is lovingly restored on display here. Its a delightful island full of friendly people.
