Firefly - Mooncream

Last night we had a clear sky and a fantastic full moon. Just as the sun was setting ahead of us in the west, the moon appeared and rose behind us, initially coloured orange so it looked just like it was dawn again. The moon setting was equally as stunning as the sun rose just before, the difference being that within a short period of time it was getting hot and finding shade in the cockpit became important.

All night we had the moon lighting our way and it was during one of the watch changeovers that we discussed whether there were any damaging effects to humans being exposed to excessive moonlight! It was agreed that surely there must and equally there must be a requirement for a new cosmetic product we called 'mooncream'!!

Clearly the long period at sea is having a detrimental effect on Firefly's crew and we need to make landfall soon! At 1500 on Monday 17th (we are currently 8 hours behind UK time) we had 340 miles to sail and are hoping that if the wind and current both stay favorable as they are at present then we should be in before it gets dark (about 1830).

Our various forecasts tell us that the wind is dropping over the next few days and by the end of the week the wind will be light - however, we anticipate having enough. Currently its moderated from an east south easterly of 30 knots yesterday, down to 20 knots today. We anticipate a little less tomorrow and have started planning to get our parasailor spinnaker launched at first light on Tuesday and expect to use it all the way to Hiva Oa.
