Firefly - Arrived San Blas Islands

After 7 days of eventful sailing we have arrived in the San Blas islands. This particular passage has been described by previous World ARC participants as a washing machine ride; we know what they mean now! (definitely full cycle). However, this was all forgotten on the last run in to the islands. The wind dropped a little, the sea and swell reduced and we hoisted our spinnaker (gennaker) for a fantastic run and surf in close company with fellow participants Tim and Clare on Ghost, their XC45.

Only after crossing our finish line offshore did we have sight of the East Holandes Islands, first we saw clusters of palm trees a few miles off, then waves breaking on the coral reef and finally we saw the masts of other yachts tucked in behind the reef. We had to steer around some reefs and islands to navigate a safe way into the lagoon. Firefly is now at anchor close to Ogoppiriadup Island and there is a constant roar of the reef in the distance. Around 10 or so of our fellow rally participants are across the lagoon. Before sunset we had a dip in the warm water and swam to the island, seeing 3 stingrays, one particularly huge - more underwater exploring to follow.

We are here for a week or so with lots of islands to explore and locals to meet.

Very pleased to be here.

Paul, Susie, Peter and Grateful (hasn't seen a parrot yet)
