Aspen - Log 22 Sunday 15 Dec; Life in the Fast Lane

I normally write the daily log sitting in the cockpit and staring out at the endless sea. Not today! Right now the crests of monster waves are sending sheets of water horizontally across the usually dry cockpit, soaking everything in its' path. Instead I am down below watching for other sailboats and ships as well as looking at our speed indicator. 12.8 knots has been the highest I have seen so far as we careened and surfed down a wave. Just think of that, 12.8 knots. Aspen usually travels at 4-6 knots, sometimes with the help of her beautiful engine. Today we have a scrap of jib out for steering and a scrap of main out for power and stability. That is all. Yet with only that amount of sail we averaged 6 knots for the last 24 hours. An average of 6 knots! Aspen can't and doesn't go that fast, but here we are with squalls raging all around us and the Trade Winds simply blasting us from all directions on their way from Africa to the Caribbean.Moderation would be nice to see anytime and as soon as possible!
