Golden Spirit of Islay - Arrival in Las Palmas - getting ready for the 24th

We reached Las Palmas at last on Sunday 10th November.  After leaving Puerto Calero, Lanzarote on the 2nd, we sailed to a bay on the south of the island and spent a night there enjoying the quiet and lack of lights. Unfortunately the freezer stopped working (again) and we had to return to the marina to have it repaired.  This was not successful and we decided to wait until we were in Las Palmas in the hope that we would find a good refrigeration engineer there.  We spent the next day sailing down to a little island called Islas de Lobos, variously translated as Island of the Wolves or Island of the Fur Seals. It was very peaceful, the water was beautifully clear and we had a lovely swim before the jellyfish found us.

That evening we set off on a night sail to Tenerife, it was ideal, perfect wind, clear starry night and little other shipping.  After checking a couple of bays the following afternoon we decided to go into the public marina in Santa Cruz, with no freezer, provisions were running low and a cold beer is essential at the end of a day’s sailing! A couple of day’s R & R and we were off to Gran Canaria ready to check in for the ARC.  The sea was choppy and it was a close hauled sail with the last 3 hours under motor to reach Las Palmas.

We are now settled into our berth S33 and have started our final preparations. Visits for safety inspections, rigging checks and the all-important refrigeration engineer are under way. Time is flying by and there appears to be an endless amount of small but essential tasks to fit in. There is also the very important socialising every evening as well as seminars to attend through the day so boredom isn’t an option.
