American Spirit II - Day 418; I take a Fall Down the Stairs; Provision the Boat; & Have a Last Supper (It IS Lent) with Jeanine for a While; Saturday, February 28, 2015

One year ago today:

"Day 56; Diving with White-Tipped Sharks & Eagle Rays; Friday, February 28, 2014. The day started early for me as Russ and Laurie from Nexus had invited me to go scuba diving with them. We met on the dock at 7:00 AM, and on the way to Iguana Scuba we walked by the fish market, where pelicans and two sea lions were gathered around a fisherman filleting fish, looking for scraps. It was actually pretty amazing. One sea lion in particular was favored by this fisherman as he kept flipping him scraps of fish. He was at the feet of the fisherman and looked like a dog would if seated under the dinner table looking for scraps."

Up at 6:45 AM; then coffee with Joel.

It starts to rain at 8:21 AM, so we close the hatches and roll up the center plastic dodger window.

Breakfast at 8:45 PM is bacon, eggs cooked in bacon fat, potato, chilled pineapple slices and brown bread...for Joel and me. Jeanine has an orange, pineapple slice and tea with honey in it.

At 9:10 AM a big rain shower hits the boat. It was blowing horizontally so we had to evacuate the cockpit and go below in the cabin.

From 9:15 AM to 12:41 PM I typed 2 logs and some emails.

At 9:58 AM while going from the cockpit to the main cabin, I thought I was on the last step of the staircase and wasn't; resulting in a fall of 2 1/2 feet onto the edge of the seat down below, landing on my right kidney. Ouch. A time for Advil. Brother Jack, a doctor, says that as long as I don't see any blood in my urine I should be OK. Or did he say, 'might be OK?' Great.

At 1:00 PM I cook up a freeze dried for lunch, Lasagna with Meat Sauce.

From 1:28 PM to 1:48 PM I defrost the freezer, then empty and re-fill the 6 ice trays stored there. I store the items I'd taken out of the freezer in the refrigerator while doing this; and the temperature in the refrigerator actually drops during this 20 minute time period.

At 2:00 PM Vlado, Jack and Lupo from Civetta II; along with Jeanine and myself; take a taxi to a mercado (supermarket) to provision our boats. The store we go to is great. It even has corn on the cob, a boat favorite. Although its not as healthy looking as the corn I get at home. We're back at the boat by 3:45 PM, just as Bongo Alive is arriving at our marina. We put the 5 grocery bags onto the boat by running a line from the top of a piling on the dock to the boat; then sliding the bags, one at a time, down the line to the boat. It works brilliantly. Give Joel credit for that one. Jeanine stays with the taxi driver and goes off to a mall to try to add more minutes to her and Joel's Brazilian phones.

At 4:40 PM Joel and I head to the pool for a swim and internet. We return to the boat at 6:00 PM for coffee; then off to the French restaurant in the hotel for a 7:00 PM dinner. Jeanine joins us an hour later in the restaurant; after not having much success with the two phones. She is told at the mall that both her and Joel's phones are suspected of fraud...by them! So they're both shut down. Welcome to Brazil!

Avocet and Bongo Alive end up in the same restaurant as us for dinner. The restaurant is unusual in that the menu is divided into three sections: the first in Portuguese, the second in English and the third in French. Its the first time in Brazil that we know exactly what we're ordering when we order it. Fantastic.

We're back at the boat at around 9:15 PM. Jeanine finishes her packing as she's moving to Civetta II tonight as Heidi, Joel's youngest daughter, is arriving tomorrow morning to sail with us to Grenada. Jeanine will rejoin the boat in Grenada as we sail to St. Lucia. This is the 3rd boat Jeanine will have sailed on since joining the Rally. Sigi from Merlyn of Poole might also be joining us from Grenada to St. Lucia as Merlyn are having family fly in in Grenada.
