Firefly - Bali Hai, Moorea

We came through the pass in Bai D'Opunohu in late afternoon of Thursday 17th April and felt like we were sailing into the set of South Pacific. The memorable green mountainous back drop surrounds the bay. Unlike the Tuamotus there was no current at the pass and soon after entering we tucked comfortably behind the reef just alongside Skyelark who came in an hour before us. Original plans to head ashore in search of a restaurant were abandoned after our first rum and coke, so we had supper on board (Peter's seafood chowder) and then were invited on board Skelark for flambee bananas (with rum of course). Over rum and bananas we planned an early walk for Good Friday - up the mountains nearby to a viewpoint.

The 'walk' described as arduous in the Lonely Planet guide lived up to it's name and would have been more appropriately described as a climb. We curtailed the 6 hour walk, 90 minutes in and at the first dramatic view point overlooking the bay. Those following Peter on Facebook can see the pictures on his most recent post. It was worth the effort but carrying on further along the ridge and other pinnacles was considered too much (for most) so we descended back to the coast to lick our wounds and devour ice cream and iced tea at another Lilly's cafe. The afternoon was spent on more leisurely pursuits although Paul and Peter managed to dinghy ashore to the village of Papetoa and walk to the dive centre to book future dives.

Now the following day, Saturday 19th, we have set sail for Papeete on Tahiti. After a number of light wind days we were greeted by a good 20 knot breeze unfortunately its coming from the North East so we have a beat to windward and we have our first reef since arriving in the Pacific!

Once moored up in the marina we sadly say farewell to David and also Peter leaves the boat for 5 days. Susie is flying in tomorrow to re-start her adventure and bring essential spares and supplies (like tea bags). Susie and Paul are taking Firefly back to Moorea while David and Peter have some days sight seeing before David flies home and Peter then has some Tahiti based dives planned.
