Firefly - Rock and roll to Lanzarote

Since arriving yesterday the NE wind has held at around 15 to 20 knots. This is now much more like trade wind passage making - goose winged, running in a swell of about 2 to 3 metres and rocking, rolling and surfing. Firefly is handling it well and making about 6.5 to 7 knots. Being designed specifically for this kind of sailing Firefly is able to manage the conditions well and having a wide aft cockpit means that its all relatively comfortable - although a catamaran would probaly be better!

Paul (and Susie's) previous ocean passage, ARC 1989, was aboard a centre cockpit Westerly Seahawk (about 35ft long) and that one rolled like a pig. The Seahawk was a good boat, but quite a voluminous and the cockpit was high up and in similar conditions to today it was like a fairground ride, plus, not being very fast it took 27 days to get from Las Palmas to Barbados. As most of you will know, Susie is flying to Antigua - not wishing to experience the Atlantic again!

Puerto Calero on Lanzarote is our destination and arrival will either be late today or early tomorrow.

There are a lot more boats around us now as we approach the Canaries. As well as a constant stream of supply ships for the Islands there are a number of yachts heading this was including 2 sailing boats in the 100ft range
