Departure from Plymouth - Leg 1 (Plymouth - Bayona)

The ARC Portugal fleet finally departed Plymouth this morning following the low pressure system that caused the English Channel and Bay of Biscay to experience high winds and big swells. In contrast, at 07:00 today crews were greeted by a blue sky and winds of 10-15 knots from the north-west creating perfect conditions for an upwind start to Bayona, Spain.

Prior to the start, boats sailed passed the rally committee before tacking, jibing and practising their sail to the line. By 06:58 the fleet were in position for what was a competitive start, seeing Tazkeena IV (Azurée 46) and Firefly (Beneteau 47.7) battling for the line which was no surprise following their pre-start competition. Isabella of Portsmouth (Hanse 505) followed closely with the remainder of the fleet sailing out of Plymouth Sound passing an imposing Portuguese Frigate on their way.

The fleet have approximately 550 nautical miles to their first destination, for many being the longest passage they have ever undertaken. A high pressure system forecast to bring warm weather but variable and light winds whilst in Biscay will mean the fleet should experience minimal swells with the likelihood of having to use their engines. The first arrivals in Spain are expected this Saturday where a full programme of activities will be waiting for them.

The Plymouth start for ARC Portugal would not be possible without the support received from Mayflower Marina, the Royal Plymouth Corinthian Yacht Club, Plymouth Albion RFC and the new chandlers Captain Watts. Thank you for the support. ARC Portugal looks forward to returning to Plymouth next year for the 22nd edition of the rally!
