Great Escape of Southampton - Day 3 Great Escape 25 57N 20 25W

Day 3

All are surprisingly well given the high seas we have been experiencing (grade 7 NE gales gusting at grade 8 during the night) – with a couple of notable exceptions; Gregorio has been badly sea sick with regular stomach emptying moments, and for the first time on departing Las Palmas has appeared on deck this morning (Day 4); David managed to shake off his less extreme ‘mal de mer’ early yesterday afternoon after Emily gifted him a Scoporderm plaster, stuck behind his left ear!  John and Graham were already sporting them on the day we left port, and here’s me thinking that Sweeney Todd did their coifs!

We have settled down to our regular shift routines drafted by First Mate Steve – two hours on per pair and four hours off; alternating with a two hours on and six hours off period.  Steve (a busy man) has taken up the shifts for the no shows – but hopefully, ill health is a thing of the past and we all do our scheduled nautical and domestic tasks.  We each do a shared shift with two other crew; except Steve who shift shares with three other crew!  We managed 186 miles over the opening 24 hour period, under the light of a full, watery moon – we heard whistling in the dark!  Our last log entry at 9am records a total distance covered so far of 275 nautical miles, all done with a No 3 Genoa and more lately two reefs in the main, first raised after lunch.  Emily, our highly competent skipper is a happy bunny.

Jan made a rather tasty Norwegian beef and vegetable stew for dinner – and tonight’s meal might be a tasty dorado from the end of Graham’s fishing line – mmmm, I  hear you say: ‘more like spag bol from the freezer’! So, our daily photo features Jan spinning a line off the back of the boat…………nothing changes!
