Makena - Pacific Crossing - 14 days done

Sorry about the irregular blog rate. Things are all going very well aboard. Dave just made us a salad+ for lunch and he’s made more lovely bread since the last time I wrote also. Oliver is the clean-up king - much appreciated. There’s been lots of rust patrol also. Sarah made her first banana (& raisin & walnut) cake and that is definitely being added to the repertoire. No more bananas now. No more lots of things. We can have no fruit or veg for our arrival in Hiva-Oa anyway so that should not be a problem.

We’ve had some beautiful moons, sunsets and sunrises. We often see flying fish and the odd bird. The waves are very tame. We saved one flying fish that jumped aboard but as usual there have been many casualties among his comrades and lots of squid washing on deck to cook also! We haven’t caught any more fish though we did hook yet another marlin - this one jumped and got free pretty easily. 11 lures lost now.

Yesterday we had a kitchen disaster in that my moussaka left overs for 5 flew down the stairs, going everywhere. Pasta and sundried tomato pesto saved the day within 30 mins.

I’m writing this on the longest Pi Day of our lives (american style dates!). We are looking at 6 more days to go. This Pi Day has been quietly epic so far. In a big team effort we got the spinnaker halyard back attached to its rotating shackle and back down the inside of the mast. We triumphantly raised the main and spinnacker to get our VMG (velocity made good - ie speed to destination) back up around the 8 knots mark. The previous 24 hours with wing on wing (stay sail out portside and genoa starboard, no main) we had clocked up a mere 146 nautical miles to our usual 200+. Sarah climbed the mast twice because unfortunately on the first attempt she cut through 2 things instead of one and messed up. A story for sailors for another day! 2nd climb was fully scripted and though 2 small problems arose, all went well.

‘Baby’ Kai has decided that he no longer needs a mid morning nap. He used to sleep about 3 hours after waking. This is an unwelcome development but so be it! :) He’s working on his upper molars and has the energy of a greyhound out the gate. He will only accept to eat food that he serves himself now also and he eats what we eat for the most part. He hasn’t given up on momma feeding time but there is so much exploring to be done that he has less and less time for it!

After dinner tonight we’ll have under a third of the way to go. Send us the rugby results please!
