Exody - Day 3 - Closing Colombia

Crew recovering from bugs and back to normal duties and appetites - weather less squally but the night quite windy with much over 25 knots and the morning seas rough. We tried our shorter pole with a furled/reefed genny but not very effective, so since Monday night have been mostly under main alone ranging from full sail to double reefed - less sail usually best! Now on Tuesday we are bowling along with average days runs so far of just over 170 miles and average speed just over 7 knots for the first three days.

As we close the Colombian coast from our position 50/60 miles north of Aruba at the morning roll call (the most northerly boat in the fleet by quite a way), the equatorial current has reduced. We are hoping to maintain the average without it's help and our northerly position has given us an easier angle to achieve without our long pole than directly downwind for the last 300 miles - we are able to fly a small genny and double reefed main on a broad reach - much more satisfactory and with reduced risk of gybing. Seas and swells are still big with the 22-28 knot winds but the ride is comfortable!

Mid afternoon Tuesday a Colombian Coastguard plane came circling very very low overhead - reassuring to know they know of our presence and we heard on the evening net that several others had been similarly 'buzzed'
