Exody - Day 25 - 4th December - Lunation Double Birthday

Whether it is a real word or not, we started a tradition of 'lunations' with our last boat in the early eighties in Trinidad where I was living. Every full moon we would invite a couple of friends and go for a short evening moonlit sail around the small islands in the north of Gulf of Paria. There have been few opportunities to reprise this experience in the intervening 30 odd years but the very near full moon over a tropical sea rising directly above our wake and setting many hours later over the pulpit brought the memories of this privilege back.

It was a great way to finish a day of double birthdays at sea - Marian's 60th and Kathy's 66th. The day of quiet winds and slight sea was much the same as the previous 'golden' day. Balloons were tied up, gifts were opened, hidden treats were excavated- some given to us nearly 6 months ago by another Kathy in Glasgow for such special occasions. The last of Marian's famous rum punch was the lunchtime toast. The wind was light enough to crank up the engine which also helped the fridge to chill the Cape Verde bubbly for an evening toast in advance of a meal of suckling pig (tinned ham actually) baked with vegetables (tinned) , capers and the last of the potato. With less than 100 miles to go by the evening, we motored through the night clocking up about 14 hours in all to be assured of a lunchtime arrival in St Lucia.
