Aretha - The Darker Side of Life at Sea

You all know it’s not all sunsets and champagne sundowners.

For all those thinking this all sounds too good to be true, here’s the top 10 reasons why you shouldn’t sail across the Atlantic and you wouldn’t enjoy life at sea:

1) Your home continually moves. lurches and wobbles around. Perfect for developing your balance - a nightmare if you like stability;
2) Hot showers only every 5 days. Managing water and power means it’s not always hot showers on demand;
3) No Facebook (hooray:))
4) No popping to the shops if you run out of milk
5) If it breaks you fix it. No plumbers on call out here.
6) Limited Privacy. A boat is a small place and you can only get a tiny amount of privacy
7) You’d best like your crew. 24 hours a day is pretty intense. Those with small children will empathize.
8) You wear the same clothes for several days as its easier than washing them
9) Sleep deprivation. The boat needs to be sailed 24 hours a day.
10) No takeaways when you don’t feel like cooking - its all down to you and the crew.

All this is true. So why on earth are 200 odd boats crossing the Atlantic in convoy with some 1000-1500 crew aboard?

Well yes we’re probably unhinged but quite simply it’s just awesome. Another evening tonight under the stars in mid Atlantic gliding along under wind power.

Over and out from the loonies on Team Aretha,
